Pick-up for ibanez rg
« on: January 09, 2012, 10:27:35 AM »
hi i'm italian and i'm new in this forum,
i need some advice
i have an ibanez rg (this: http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/page11_jp.php?&data_id=67&color=CL04&cat_id=1&series_id=350 ) whit mahogany body and 24 freets, currently the guitar mounted di marzio tone zone (bridge) true velvet (middler) and air norton (neck) but the sound is only appropriate for 80 style (heavy metal)and is not very versatile, i would like to get more versatility and more punch (i like play classic rock, hard rock, heavy metal) ,and i would like to get good rock/blues sound (strato style) with the switch (5 way switch) in the 2 and 4 position.
please can you tell me the right choice to do(my pick-up configuration is h-s-h) ,and can you also tell me the right measures that i should take about pick-up?
(excuseme for my english,i hope you get the idea)
thanks

Hello!

Take a look here for some suggestions, you will need to adjust your order to have a neck humbucker to match the bridge  :)

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/pickups.php?cat=strats&sub=hss&pickup=

For an all-round rock/blues/metal tone I would consider:

* Black Dog humbuckers & a Slow Hand single coil
* VH II humbuckers & an Irish Tour single coil
* Emerald humbuckers & a Mother's Milk single coil

Yes, same model for bridge and neck - they are matched as a pair  :)

The Holydiver is a bit hotter than blues/rock and closer to what you already have now.

i do not seek rock/blues sound,i like classic rock ,hard rock and heavy metal (I would like something in the middle between old school hard 'n heavy sound and modern hard'n heavy sound)
but if possible i tried the rock blues (or strato sound) sound in the position 2 and 4 ( 3 position together the split humbacker )

I am somewhat thinking Alnico Nailbomb for that bridge between modern and old school with a lot versatility in there.
Maybe a slowhand middle with that, vintage but fat.

That is just an idea though, IŽll let someone with more knowledge say if it is viable.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Welcome to the forum! I would go with a Nailbomb Alnico V model for sure. IT is a great all around pickup for all kinds of rock and metal related stuff. In split coil it sounds pretty good and does have a nice bluesy tone if you mess with the tonen nob and volume a bit. For the bridge you could stick with a matched set, which means get a nailbomb neck. It has great lead neck tones and is a solid pickup. Now this is just good for an introduction to BKP.

You may also want to look into the Rebel Yell. It has an incredible range of applications, a very sweet organic voice, and does well with hard rock/modern metal as well as standard rock, classic rock, and progressive rock. A great matching neck pickup is the VHII. It's one of the best neck pickups BKP makes and sounds amazing for all kinds of rock and metal tones. You have a very versatile set of pickups there.

For single coils you need a medium output single but honestly ask Tim; send him an email. I do not know how to match singles with Humbucker pairs. I've only played the Slow hand, which is a good option or the Trilogy Sweet, which may be too hot. Someone with a better knowledge of single coil matching should answer; or email Tim Mills as I said. Good luck!

I find the holy diver to be much more versatile than the nailbomb
rebel yell sounds promising too
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

some people (in italy) have advised me for a nailbomb (alnico) in bridge position, slowhand in the middle and cold sweat for the neck, what do you think about it?now i'm sure for the bridge and middle pick-up but not forn the neck pickup because i'm undecided between  nailbomb or cold sweat ,which is better?

I think that combo would work. The CS is much praised here as a very good modern neckpickup. However, I think Holydivers  - as Eric said - are a bit more versatile.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I guess he meant a holy diver set
but the bridge versions pairs well with the cold sweat neck too
perfect volume and voicing match

I would choose the following:

- Holydiver or Alnico Nailbomb for the bridge (Holydiver being the preferred one)
- Irish Tour for the middle - Slowhand may be too dark
- Cold Sweat or Nailbomb for the neck (Cold Sweat being the preferred one)

Cheers Stephan
