is it ok to fit a tapped p-90 without actually wiring the tap so i can use it until i buy a push/pull pot..?

Yes, just decide which sound you want (probably the full output), and insulate the tap wire.

ok thanks phil. ive done that now but how exactly do you choose which sound you want then????

You have to try both.  You can take the wire out through the jack socket before you solder it, and try wiring each.  See which works best for you.
