Picks to suit a Laney
« on: March 09, 2012, 12:41:38 AM »
I had done pick up suggestion mouths ago and i was told to buy a tube amp.

So i have bought a laney 100 watt protube AOR.

Great amp the only problem i have is driving up the gain it gets fuzzy rather ballsy destortion which what i want something hard and agressive.

The genre i want to focus on is Hardcore punk
e.g Rise against Gallows Leathermouth black flag anti flag etc I prefere the vintage kinda tone from gallows

early metal and thrash metal e.g metallica kill em all era with iron maiden and blacksabbath

Also forgot to mention i like motorhead asweel

I like the vintage/modern tone something you hear these days where modern rock bands sound like there from a different era eg my chemical romance king of leon and gallows.

At the moment iy sounds more like a rhyme guitar and i currently have no pedals

Il soon be getting a tubescreamer and a eq pedal with boost

I want to be able to play lead and rhyme as attempting to play like a lead player e.g kirk hammet ray toro was a failure.

this time im open to any suggesting go for it.

I would like tims opinion that would be nice.

Sorry I have a epiphone Specail II GT bolt on neck solid mahagony body and neck with rosewood fret

Putting the Tubescreamer type pedal in front will dramatically tighten it up, though you are going to loose some of the low-end.

I recommend the Maxon OD808 RI or the Barber Driver Direct as far as the od pedals go.  There are many good ones out there, but I like these in particular.

As far as pickups, it kind of depends on the tuning.  The Rebel Yell is quite awesome if you want to go with Alnico V.  If you want to go in your face kind of sound, Painkiller or Warpig.

More mastervolume and less gain on the amp, od-pedal in front.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

you will castrate the amp even more. if its fuzzy, try with a sonic maximizer instead to give it more bottom end punch.

As the dudes wrote, then tell us which guitar you plan to mod?

I had 1 of those amps years ago and they (aswell as most other Laneys in my experience of owning) do have a fuzzy edge on the Distortion.

I always found the fuzz to go somewhat when the amp could be cranked up a bit and lower the gain a tad.

As for pickups, need more info on the guitar 1st  :D

Opeth Use to Run Laneys And Used Duncan Full Shreds (A Clear Slightly Mid Scooped Pickup) So The Obvious Answer Is Cold Sweat! Or If You Want More Aggression I Hear The Ceramic Nailbomb Is Basically An Overwound Cold Sweat.

The Laney AOR series amp is a high gain amp - loads of it on tap. I would therefore not go for the pickup with the most output available and second the Cold Sweat suggestion.

Epiphone les paul Specail II GT mohagony body and neck rosewood fret board.

The bridge humbucker is broken and needs a replacement it dosen't play well it keeps turning off in the middle of playing.

Can you explain "more cut" i've heard the term but i think you've brought a whole new meaning to the table.

More treble and high mids. Will 'cut' better through the mix in a band.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
