Should I consider a Warpig?
« on: June 13, 2012, 10:38:46 AM »
Hey guys,

I'm planning on changing the wiring in my Gibson SG with a RS Guitarworks wiring kit as I don't like the current pots, and have heard great things about the kits.

After i've done that i'm going to replace the stock pickups, starting with the bridge. I use a Marshall DSL50, and depending on what i'm playing a variety of pedals. I'm undecided between low-output and high-output, and have become interested in the Warpig after reading it's surprisingly versatile.

The heaviest i'd need to go would be bands like Closure In Moscow, Biffy Clyro, Pulled Apart By Horses, Arcane Roots and The Fall Of Troy.

On the less 'heavy' side of things, bands like The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In, Incubus etc.

I like a wide-range of music, but I figured seeing as I have a Strat and my PRS has vintage-esque pickups, maybe going for something with a higher output would be a good idea.

Basically, should I only really consider the WP if I want to do Death Metal etc. or is it versatile as some people suggest? If it can do anything from decent cleans all the way up to really heavy stuff, it could be the one for me :)

Any help you can give will be much appreciated guys/girls. Then i've gotta work out a neck pickup, i'm thinking a MQ :)

how about a set of Stockholms? - certain to give you plenty of poke, but a much different vibe to your other guitars with the P90 design...  https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/pickups.php?cat=p90s&sub=humbucker_sized_p90s&pickup=stockholm

I have a set of MQ's (bridge is wound hot at 10.5k) and they're a crackin set of pickups.

Thanks for the reply :) i've definitely considered the Stockholms. What sort of sounds can your MQ's cover? Part of me thinks i'd be better of getting something like a P90 or the Riff Raffs.

Anyone else got a Warpig in their SG?

Or any other versatile set in an SG?

I dont  have an Apig in an SG but in a tele style. it can do allot more than death metal, but I wouldnt say its super versitile . I use it clean for a couple of song parts and its passable. but I'm more of a neck clean guy anyway .I'd call the cleans decent for sure but if your a chord strummer rather than a picker clean I don't think its the choice.

it loves gain . at low to mid gain drive settings its EQ is a bit weird to me , but as soon as you feed it more gain it comes alive . High gain on the amp with a big volume roll back it does a much better mid gain than using an OD for my set up   .

Maton- jazz/JB
Cole Clark -NB Neck ,  Apig
Mayones Setius - Juggs
Et Guitars Katana 7 -Juggs
Mesa Dual Rect
and more stuff

Ah ok cool, I don't think it's the pickup for me then :)

I'm considering either humbucker sized P90s or something like Riff Raff/Mules.

Cheers for your reply Mongey, I really appreciate it.

I know it gets mentioned in every SG post, but for a good reason, keep your mind open on the Riff Raff. Great for heavy and not so heavy.

Yeah, i've heard that haha. I'm definitely considering them, trying to find some clips that aren't mostly AC/DC type tracks.

I've now been tempted by the idea of Nailbomb/MQ

Every time I listen to some music I seem tomchange my mind about which set to get.

So far i've considered:

Riff Raffs
Mules
Nailbomb/MQ
Warpig/MQ
MQ/MQ
Stockholm/MQ

I'm looking up as many clips and reviews as possible :)

I emailed a little while ago and Ben said:

"The Riff Raffs are hot vintage, quite bright, pretty raucous and with good cleans. They can do blues through to classic metal - so pretty versatile. A smoother, warmer option would be the Mule.

The Mississippi Queens are a great set. Fat and bluesy, clear and warm - a lovely P90 tone. Very popular and versatile (Matt Bellamy from Muse uses the MQ).

For even more versatility you could consider a Riff Raff bridge and a Mississippi Queen neck. Whatever combo you choose - you won't have any more mud!"

I keep going from low-output Riff Raffs to being tempted by the Warpig. Something about the Warpig just tempts me...
