Stepping out of my comfort zone...... WARPIG???!!!
« on: June 25, 2012, 12:31:39 PM »
Yes, believe it or not, "Mr Middle of the Road Dad Rock" is contemplating the purchase of a br00talz pickup!  :o

Basically I was on eBay yesterday and made a totally unplanned, spur of the moment guitar purchase, just because it was pretty cheap* and I liked the look of it.    I was sober at the time....

(* I say "pretty cheap", but by the time it's been shipped from Japan it will - of course - have cost me enough to ensure that I make a huge loss when I inevitably sell it....  )

Anyway, it's an old Greco SG, I'm assuming it's mahogany although frankly I have no idea how upmarket a model it is/was, so it may be a "mahogany equivalent".  But it looks the part.

I'm not expecting a "tone machine", so I thought it might be fun to lob something high-output in it, which made me think..... Warpig.  I then realised I really don't know anything about the Warpig neck pickup, except that it's also high-output.  Does it give much contrast with the bridge model?  If not, what else would match well with a Pig bridge?  Is the whole idea of me buying a Warpig ridiculous?  :?

Any thoughts?

That's the entire sum of my thoughts/experience on this.

I'll be interested to see what you get, though... I considered something like this a while back.

I have no idea about the neck model.

Meanwhile I do have the bridge model and, although a definitely a firebreather, I can confirm it has a sweet sounding tone and surprisingly versatile. Its as gainy as hell, really fun for throwing down riffs.

Yeah, I was thinking about it for a single pickup guitar, and talk like that from gwEm made me think mmm, sounds, good...

You could always get an NFL jersey instead...

That's what I was thinking, although it's super-hot it has always struck me as rather warm and fuzzy, not anything at all scary (I'm talking A-Pig, of course, not C-Pig).  I imagine it sort of "plays itself" (albeit badly, in my case)?

I must have totally missed that!

I can't see me in an NFL jersey..... don't they start at, like, size XXL?

I have major gas for a Pigged SG, it just seems like a pickup that would be a lot of fun!

Warpigs and SG's, the best combo since fish and chips?

I hope the guitar purchase turns out nice for you Philly.  :)

Meanwhile I am genuinely excited on your behalf about the possibilities of owning a neck ( Alnico ) Warpig  :D - as I have long wanted to try one for Jazz . I think we have all read the rumours that they have been ordered for that purpose, but most of all , I can imagine why they would be really quite special in that role.  I look forward to news and pictures of both !

It can definitely give that feeling for riffage. I like playing 80s-period Scorpions with it.

Thanks Derek.   :D

It would be interesting if one of these mysterious "French jazz guitarists" joined the forum, I'm not sure I've ever read any comments from anyone with first-hand experience of the "Jazz-Pig".

Failing all else, it might be an excuse for me to 'cave in' and order one.    I am genuinely fascinated by the beast - and would report back. As you say, it's time the myth / legend / reality of the 'A-pig Jazz Monster'  was at last revealed !  8)

Did you get pissed later then? ...

If you don't want to go for for a pig neck what about a stockholm one. There's just something about those Swedes.

Good idea!  I was considering the MQ, but hadn't thought of the Stockholm.  Interesting..... good match for the Warpig, d'you think?

In fact, I must confess, I didn't even realise the Stockholm was an HSP-90.... I thought it was a normal P-90 model, for some reason.  Have they changed the specs, or was I just totally wrong?

I haven't played any of the pups, but I think the beefy character of the Stockolm will match the brutalness and low end of the Warpig better than the MQ, but it's just my hunch.

I'm pretty sure the Stockholm has been a HSP-90 all the time, but it's sibling the Supermassive is a P-90 and I think the two were designed to be pretty similar tone wise and name wise both seem inspired by Muse.

The Stockholm became a HSP90 when the P90 range got revamped, or maybe just before.  Before then, only the MQ was a HSP90  :)
