Setting up my Tele
« on: June 28, 2012, 03:26:39 PM »
I finally found some spare time in my stupidly busy home life to do some set up work on my Baja.

So far all I have done is set the action height to the specifications suggested in the Haynes Fender Telecaster Manual. I've had a set of feeler gauges in my toolbox for ages just waiting to be used.

Although it is only a small bit of work done so far I can say that it has made a big difference, at least to me, in how the guitar plays. I even managed to find 30 minutes to play some pretty bad guitar (I also moved my amp into a place where it was accessible and not be used as something to put stuff on top of!)

I think over the next few weeks I'll be working through the other parts of the book that are applicable!
I think I hate being indecisive.

I don't know s**t about the "Haynes Fender Telecaster Manual", but I've been setting up my axes by myself for quite a few years now, did my share of experiments to find out what difference it can make wrt/ both playability and tone - and it's huge - and my humble opinion is that whatever is written in a book, you have to sort out by yourself what works for _you_ for _this_ guitar. Even with two very guitars taht are very close wrt/ neck radius & profile, bridge and pickups type and layout etc, I end up with sensibly different action to get the same feel and playability (I guess the frets and nut make most the difference, but there's also something that really belongs to the guitar itself IMHO).

Oh and yes, a Telly can be a real bitch to set up properly - well, Tellies ARE bitches anyway, but that's why we love them, don't we ?

Yeah, the book does state that it is a reference starting point and that you should give a go to tweaking until you find something that feels better FOR YOU. I'm not at that stage yet but am sure I will tweak when I have some more spare time.

I've also just finished adjusting the pickup heights - dropped the bass side a little on both and it does sound a bit better so far.
I think I hate being indecisive.

I've been tinkering with my guitars for around 30 years but I found the Dan Erlwine book really good and as I recall it has an interesting bit about how Jerry Hogan sets the intonation using a 3 barrel saddle :)

I found reading books on the topic really helped improve my confidence :)
