Seems perfect for the lonely single man in his early 40s living in a bedsit rebuilding his life after a messy divorce... just big enough to fit a few ready meals and milk.

You're right, that's probably the target audience, I should've thought.

And it's small enough to leave space for his guitars and real Marshall half-stack.  Assuming the divorce settlement hasn't forced him to sell them.

Huh ... I was forced to sell my (full) stack when I got married (first time), not divorced  :(.

Apparently it didn't match the curtains.

Ah sorry, I've never been married or divorced.

Which has, of course, facilitated the Giant Hogweed-like growth of my guitar, guitar parts, CD, DVD and Blu-ray collections....  :|

You are blessed Philly..

Funny but the older I get the more I appreciate dodging the marriage bullet.

A one sided contract that grants no rights to the male but crystalises obligations in perpetuity...

You can't even expect fidelity anymore... only last night I met two "good wives" on a girly night out... F**k me they were on heat and their husbands were the last thing on their minds.

Hmmm, I dunno, I'm going to have a lonely old age.  :|

Which I suppose won't be much different to a lonely middle age.... but with added "benefits" like dementia and prostate problems....  :?

I can't imagine living with anyone, though, to be honest.  I would've liked to have kids, but I always found it much easier to imagine being a father than being a husband.  Anyway, it's all academic now.

Blimey, that's a bit depressing.  Who'd have thought a discussion about a novelty fridge would lead here.....  Hey ho, mustn't grumble!

The fear of a lonely old age is probably the thing that drives men into the farce of modern marriage once the lovestruck phase has calmed.

With more than 50% of marriges ending in divorce a "lonely old age" is more than likely for the once married.

The way most married men get isolated from their friends, I'd say it's odds on.

I'm going to be in the same boat as you Philly and the sure way to NOT be lonely is to force yourself out of the house, enjoy hobbies with like minded friends and maintain those friendships,

Do some volunteer work.

All of the above are harder for the married man who has essentially put all his eggs & money into a very flimsy basket.

If you can name one legal aspect where marriage benefits a man (excluding emotional impact on kids/religious demands) I might reconsider.

Marriage only benefits women and the state.

Ooops - didn't mean to steer the thread into the pros and cons of marriage. :|

I must confess that another reason the stack went was that my first maritial dwelling was a picturesque but VERY small cottage and it was an absolute nightmare getting two 4x12 cabs and head into the spare bedroom.

I'm not married but I've never had a problem getting my head in the bedroom

I don't see it as cynical as Dave, but recently I must say I have been having reservations about the whole thing.

I don't like to pry, but didn't you get engaged not so long ago, gwEm?  :?

yes, very much so.

but its hard not to see the disadvantages of actual marriages, especially after a solid run of failed relationships myself. and also seeing the tough stories of divorce.

nevertheless, still i do think marriage is a beautiful thing, if you get the right two people, and keep working at it, i think it can be really cool partnership.

i just want to give things longer to develop than originally planned.

Spot on. Although never married myself I've always believed the key to a long term relationship is working at it and accepting that it won't always be plain sailing (although you obviously want as much of it as possible to be exactly that). Even more so when kids are involved - having 4 kids now I can honestly say that I have never felt so emotionally tired in my whole life and have rarely been in a position where I have had to be extremely careful with how I spend money. It turns out there are more important things than buying guitars, amps and effects.

I know quite a few really nice girls that have either got married or engaged because they found "the one" and that they "love him" even when he treats them like sh!t. Perhaps unsurprisingly these relationships don't last longer than a few years.

Without intruding gwEm I really hope that your relationship does develop into what it is you want and that you have a long and happy life together!

I think I hate being indecisive.
