Hello guys, I can't believe it's almost 2 years since I've been on this forum! I feel a bit bad that it's to ask a question, but here it goes.

I've got 72 custom re-issue with brown sugar in the bridge and riff raff in the neck. They've been in since 2009 and I put them in myself, i'm looking to tidy up my internal electronics and my 3 way toggle switch has started playing up..so here's my plan.

I'm thinking of fitting a 5 way rotary switch instead (i always knock the toggle) to get a split coil on the humbucker and lots of tones at the turn of a dial.

Here's my problem, how would i go about it on one of those strange switches. I've found this wiring diagram for a normal 5 way switch, but there seems to be a lot more pieces to solder too than a normal 5 way switch.

Any help would be amazing!

p.s I'm also planning to put some orange drops in there and general tidy everything up with cloth wire, new pots and copper insulation. (any ideas/thoughts welcome to crazy mods/ built in effects as well!!!)

Here's the guitar in questions

And here's the headstock that I got signed by Wilko Johnson

Thanks in Advance.

George

I am an idiot! I've just realised it's pretty much the same isn't it, I never seen a normal 5 way switch in person and didn't even think that it's got 5 on each side. DUH!

I was thinking that there should only 5 there as there are only 3 on my 3way switch!

nope, that aint a normal 5-way switch (which are exactly the same as a 3-way switch with extra notches to hold in in the inbetween settings)

that diagram is for a super-switch

this is a standard fender switch, 3 or 5 way look the same

compared to a super switch with millions of  (well, 24) lugs

have a look at the rotary switch diagram here for the 5-position, 4pole switch - its pretty much the same as the super switch in the way it works

Cheers man, The only thing that's really confusing me now is How do I wire it with my two vol and two tone knobs, can't find any wiring diagrams to help....the closest i've found is.

http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WD2HH5R11_01/Guitar-Wiring-Diagram-2-Humbuckers5-Way-Rotary-Switch1-Volume1-Tone-01.html

but obv I'm using a single coil in the bridge piece and 2 vol and 2 tones...

I'm used to making effects pedals (just distortions and fuzzes) but this is completely different lol.

cheers

the closest is the classic les paul wiring diagram, which is how your guitar is currently wired - you wire to the volume and tone pot straight from the pickup - then add the switch after

substitute your switch diagram above into this
http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WD2HH3T22_00/Guitar-Wiring-Diagam-w-2-Humbuckers3-Way-Toggle-Switch2-Volumes2-Tones.html

tbh, for what you want i would be tempted to keep the wiring and 3-way switch as is and wire a push/pull pot to split the neck bucker - much more straight forward than pissing around with rotaries

I managed to wire it up with it going  Pickups > 5 way > coil bypass switch > vol/tone and also added in a rangemaster treble boost with a high pass filter.

I've also stripped the body and started to spray it firemist/shorline gold
