And all his talk about how chords sound on a Les Paul.... most rock players will play chords on the bridge pickup 99% of the time, so the number of frets and placing of the neck pickup is totally irrelevant.

So true. If the neck pickup sounds muddy, just use the bridge pickup. It's as easy as that. And by just changing to a 24 fret guitar I don't feel a significant improvement on the muddiness of the neck pickup.

And for those who play 24-fretters - how much do you actually use those top two frets?

Almost ..... never ?

Cheers Stephan

i am keen on 24 fret necks myself.  probably because my first "proper" guitar about 20 years ago had 24.  and i find i do use them, i had to adjust a bit when i started using 22 fret guitars!  but i wouldn't say one was better than the other.  and i have a Tele with 21 frets, which i also love.  hard to beat the sound of a good neck pickup, whatever number of frets you have

Ah good one, thanks for posting. Best satire I have read in a bit.

Wait, he is serious? Sh!t...

Actually I use my 24 frets suprisingly often. Often enough to sometimes fret empty space when playing 22 frets. I just like extending my solo melodies that high for dramatic effect. I would only notice it on the high e and the b string though.
Not that I canīt work with 22 frets, but I guess I just am a 24 kinda guy. Never really had the chance to do a propper side by side comparion sound wise though.
I recon it makes a difference though, yet saying one is clearly superior is something I can discard right away. All a matter of taste.

Also with his "this is cancelling out frequencies and that is always bad" does he not kinda bash guys like Jimmy Page and Peter Green, saying their tone (in Peters case a legendary tone) is bad?
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Gibson MIII?  :)

On the PRS Mira I missed that slightly warmer neck pickup tone.  Also the neck, with 23 frets clear of the body, seemed ridiculously long somehow (for some reason I don't get that same feeling with a DC Les Paul Junior, even though the neck joins the body where the 23rd fret would be....)

The only 24-fret guitar I now own is my Gibson SG-X.  That suits the 24 frets because (a) the neck joins the body in exactly the same place it would on a 22-fret SG anyway and (b) there's no neck pickup.  I do sometimes think about fitting a minibucker or single-coil in the neck position, it would look really cool but I'm reluctant to take a router to the guitar.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

At risk of being a pedant here but can everyone please refer to Ed Roman in the past tense. That would make me so much happier.  :D
I think I hate being indecisive.

I'll happily offer both 22 or 24 where it's possible - it can be a personal choice
