Which is the best amp for SG with RIFF RAFF/MULE set?
« on: October 10, 2012, 07:07:14 AM »
Hello! I'm Matej from Italy! I need an advice :)  Ok, I have a Gibson SG Standard with a set of Riff Raff/Mule pickups. I have an Orange Rockerverb 100 MKII with 4x12 Orange V30's.   With my guitar, this amp sound good, but it is too modern and I don't know which amp to buy for classic crunch/ACDC/lynyrd skynyrd/hellacopters sound. So, I would like to ask some owners of this pickups, which is the amp that sounds the best with this set of pickups. I'm looking for a half stack, so 50w/100w head and a 4x12 cabinet :)  thanx!

It has to be a Marshall 1959 model Plexi handwired and the matching 4x12 if you play loud!

What budget do you have, and how loud do you play?

I second Twinfan's advice but indeed these are very loud amps. Depending on the tone you are shooting for and the volume you are allowed to play you may need a boost/overdrive pedal and/or a power attentuator with this set up. Another good option is the Vox AC-30 or a derivative of it (e.g. Matchless DC-30, Bad Cat Black Cat, Top Hat King Royale, Valvetech Hayseed and I am sure there are more).

Cheers Stephan

Marshall or Wizard Amps.

If you cannot play loud, get a good attenuator.

you could try a marshall master volume model 2203 or 2204. they sound not-bad at bedroom volumes even with the built in MV.. but for the magic to happen you need to turn it up a bit.

Or you turn em full up and do the rest with the gain knob.

The plexi hardwired will be the best amp, I know, but it is too much expensive. I cannot afford it. My budget is 1000euros more or less, so probably I'll get a used amp for this money. Probably I could afford the SLP 100 watt or even the 2203. I'm worried about the JCM800, because probably this amp is too much hard rock oriented. Since I already have a 4x12 cab, do you think that a Marshall head (like SLP 100) will sound good with an Orange 4x12 loaded with V30s?

PS. and what about the new Orange OR50H?

Your cab will be OK for now, I'd buy a used Plexi and enjoy it!

A Marshall of some sort, a la 1987, 1959, 2203, 2204, etc. No contest IMO!

... with an Orange 4x12 loaded with V30s?

BTW have you tried your amp with a different cab? The V30 - even though it has the word "vintage" in its name is a rather modern sounding speaker with a very pronounced aggressiveness in the midrange.

there's a new player that's been bugging my mind since I heard about it

bad cat cougar 50
amp is actually made by kustom
costs about 500-600 euros at thomann.de

not really a marshall tone, but goes from vox sparkly cleans to cranked vox/plexi like tones all the way to big doomy high gain
for the price, that's one hard to beat option and you could still sell it for the same, as they cost a lot more in the US

I've tried to change the speakers of the Orange 4x12: Scumback M75 and G12H Heritage 75hz  with bad results. The Rockerverb sounds good ONLY with V30. Scumbacks had way too much low end (unplayable) and the G12H was very harsh and empty sounding. So I put 2 made in england V30s from 1996 and 2 chinese (25th anniversary) V30s

Which plexi should I buy? 1987x or 1959 SLP?

The Bad Cat seems to be a good amp, but probably I need an original Marshall crunchy rock sound :)

This amp is too dark. Nothing beats a Marshall. I just bought a 100W JMP 2203 for 600GBP with brand new JJs in it and shipped. Get one of those, gain between 5 and 6 and you're set. If you wanna spend the remaining 400, get a Rivera Rock Crusher and you will have tone to die for at bedroom volume.

did you play it? it's a pain in the ass finding reviews of it

can you tell me more?

I bought one from thomann but had to cancel the purchase
bad cat told me the 240v transformer could be rewired to 120v, but hanser/kustom told me it couldn't be rewired or even rewound
a new transformer is US$100 and they didn't have it in stock

50w or 100w, the choice is yours...
