warpig question
« on: October 23, 2012, 09:40:04 AM »
Hi guys.I'm going to order warpig bridge pickup but I need last shot to decide if alnico or ceramic.Guitar when would be placed is ltd viper maple neck through alder wings ebony fretboard which is quite midy and bright. In case I will not be satisfied with it I would place it to my Gibson SG standard which is also on brighter side of eq.Playing almost all kinds of heavy music (from HC to Grind Core) through 92' dual recto and Marshsall 2203KK and V30 equiped cabs.Thank you for help....

My Ltd Viper is housing a ceramic WP bridge and a overwound MQ neck. The WP really slays. For a Recto I would generally prefer a ceramic pickup but it might be helpful if you would give us some more sonic references to make a recommmendation.
bridge: NB, CS, C-WP, TM
neck: NB, TM, MQ

Hey Pop...Thanx for imput...I´m sure that Warpig is made for my Viper no doubt...I have there now Miracle Man which is quite bright and almost twangy on high mid-treble side...Propably that ebony fretboard has own part on it as well...I also have all mahogany Viper but there is night and day difference in comparison between those two axes...So basicaly I need to tame highs and increase low end...Also I want bit more gain and agression than has Miracle Man...I´m influenced by bands as Napalm Death,Hatebreed,Merauder,S.O.D.,Exodus etc-heavy riffs with lot of palm mute...I hope it helps...Thank you...

I'm not too familiar with the bands you listed so maybe someone else can chime in. Generelly for drop / down tuned palm muting stuff I would prefer the ceramic version to keep the chugging really tight.

Its always a good idea to send an email to Tim explaining exactly what you are after - his recommendation have never failed me.

Good luck on you tone hunt!

I allways contact Tim to hear his advice but not this time...I'm pretty sure that Tim would recomend Cpig for down tuned palm mute chuging for tighter bass response but I read good things from people what swear with Apig in alder/maple...There should be kind of growl what ceramic doesn't produce...Also it's more organic and versatile....

edit:This bloody good clip push me think seriously about Apig...

I have heard somewhere that the shape of the magnetic field is slightly different, so it might affect the tone remotely, but the difference should be extremely minimal at best. 0,1mm in height adjustment should make more of a difference I think.
Plus when I asked Ben about this he said that there virtually is no difference and I should just go with what looked better to me. Ordered a set of battleworn AMs with nickel screws and like em a lot (though they are not as battered as I hoped they would be, just got a little unlucky).
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I've got a 6 string Apig and just got a 7 string Cpig in a custom guitar and play through A dual rect.

Gotta say the whole ceramic through a recto thing is worth listening to. I still like the A pig allot but the ceramic def tightens up the bass a little and the extra cut ont he Cpig is great as well

Now I have the Cpig I'm getting tempted  to swap the A pig for a ceramic PU

Maton- jazz/JB
Cole Clark -NB Neck ,  Apig
Mayones Setius - Juggs
Et Guitars Katana 7 -Juggs
Mesa Dual Rect
and more stuff

I see I'm a bit too late on this one, but here's my two cents if the ceramic warpig is too much. With a brighter guitar usually an Alnico 5 will warm up the response while increasing the bottom end and rounding out the tone. I can usually get a really tight palm mute even with alnico 5, it just depends on the scale of the guitar and the voicing of the pickups. I have a set of Bill n' becky L500's in a PRS SE Custom 24 that can handle any style almost  :D  Shorter scale guitars like Les Pauls, for instance, have a mushier feel than a longer scale like PRS, strat style or Baritone

However, if you are using a lower tuning through a Mesa, the ceramic will be tighter like everyone else has said. The high end is usually brighter and a bit more raspy with a ceramic magnet, but will clean things up considerably on the low end. Having double screws will soften the high end on a pickup. (I had a few conversations on this with Suhr) and tends to smooth out the treble response on a pickup.  Just some info I've picked up from people in the industry I've spoken with. Tim, like always, is a the best source on his products and you can always exchange them! Good luck!
