Headless hohner conversion
« on: November 04, 2012, 07:27:41 PM »
so this is a bit daft  and it almost makes more sense to start from scratch.

but i have been asked to see if i can convert a headless steinberger style hohner cricket bat into something more like a flying V.   Not a steinberger mini v shape but actual flying V styling

so here are the preliminary mockups showing potential sizes and styles next to the source guitars (controls and pickups are not to scale)

essentially I will be trimming the original guitar down to just past its pickups/bridge routes and treating it as a neck through - but am also considering doing it as  a full new body so the  original centre section can slot into it

I am pushing for the large scratchplate style as it will hide a lot of sins

...

probably the most shocking thing about this idea is that its not for gWem ;)

The '67 style definitely looks way better.  The '58 style doesn't lend itself well to the small body, IMO.

I notice that the scratchplates and controls are scaled down to fit the mockups - do you think there'll actually be room for 3 controls and a switch, in practice?

I think it's a great idea. Looking forward to seeing the finished guitar.

yeah, but probably not full size pots/knobs.   deciding stuff like that will be the next stage, if it comes down to loosing a pot then I am fine with that

there has even been mention of the potential for a schenker style paint job.

Or is gWem actually involved in the project?

I've done my fair share of Hohner G2/G2T or G3T rebuilds and pimp jobs

Still have my own one

Here she is just after I stripped her and re-veneered the body

Are the Hohners basically the same as the "Spirit by Steinberger" models, or were they different manufacturers?

(Those rebuilds look great, by the way!)

They were made in the same factory with largely the same parts.

Although a very interesting project.. I'm sort of not-so-keen on the combined version, though I love both Steinberger GP and Flying V models individually of course.

The black 58 style one is perhaps the nicer design I reckon.

Did you ever make the headless Corvus you were sketching out?

Looking at Jonathan's guitar, I see it has a fixed bridge?   My Spirit had a trem, which I really hated.... and those tuners were bar-stewards to use.  I do still like the original Steinberger concept, though.

The hohners were available before the spirits, very early on, in the 80s I believe. The very very first models had the choice of a fixed bridge. They are quite rare now, though you see them on eBay sometimes.

They also offered a Schenker-alike paint scheme.

nah,  although i still think it has potential.    I also drew a large bass version that i think has real style.

I do have a moderne body cut out ready to do something with
