Belated NAD + NPD
« on: November 11, 2012, 02:39:01 PM »
Hey guys.

Just thought I'd share a few bits I've picked up recently:

Orange Micro Terror:

I picked this up a few weeks ago after trying 1 out when Toe-Knee from the forum came down to see me for the weekend. I think we were both pretty surprised at how loud this was and how good it sounded (relatively speaking obviously) for what it is and how cheap it is.

We tried it in the shop through a Orange 2x12 with V30s and at 3 or 4 on the volume dial it'd easilly be enough to do a gig with if you were playing mic'd up, and don't need 'br00talz' levels of gain, and this is exactly what I bought it for; incase I ever get a valve blow again or some other amp problem at a gig I can pull this out and get by.

I'm not going to sit here and say it sounds as good as my SLO clone or Splawn Quick Rod, but it really did impress me with it's sound and it's small size makes it an ideal gig backup incase the worst happens.

Next up is a pedal Toe-Knee built for me:

It's based on a Fulltone OCD V3 but with a few tweaks.

I use this pedal on the crunch channel of my SLO clone to push it for more Overdrive and it works very well for this.

The Cut switch hollows out the midrange a bit if that's what you like, but I don't use it much tbh.

It's a very fat sounding boost that thickens up the midrange and beefs up my sound which I like as I'm the only guitarist in my band so it really helps fill things out.

Nice one Craig. I heard one the Micro Terrors a while back and if it weren't for the fact that I have a TT and I bought Dave's (TF) DT for my son I'd pick one too... quite a beast considering the size. It's almost unbelievable.

Ref the pedal, how come you went with a OCD clone and not a Timmy? I have to say that I really love the Klone I got from JuanSolo, we'll have to meet up and compare at some point. I'm still envious of the SLO clone you got off Toe-Knee... I was soooooooooooo close to trying to grab that one!

wow that micro terror is small, judging by the size of the cable going into it

very nice :)

Those Micro Terrors are so cool, it just amazes me you can get such big tones, not to mention good tones, out of something that small. Congrats!

Cheers guys!

I'm very happy with both new additions.

The Micro Terror was a massive surprise when we 1st tried it.

Yep I know what you mean!

I know it's a hybrid amp with valve preamp and solidstate power amp but even for 20w it's alot louder than I would've expected. It must be that I'm using it through 1x12 and 2x12 cabs, helps get rid of some of that boxiness you'd usually get from amps of this size.

As regards the pedal; I went with the OCD as that's what Tony based his own build on and when I tried it with the SLO months ago it just worked so I ordered 1  I've still not tried a Timmy but am quite curious about them.

He has since tried to build me a Timmy clone but the schematic was wrong and the builder of the original pedal has had them all taken down now so that may be a dead end.

Yep, we should meet up and crank some amps and pedals  8)

actually i've just realised i've never actually tried my joyo ocd clone into the jet city. i must try that if it sounds really good

if you can find one (don't pay over the odds, though), the danelectro v1 transparent overdrive (the one with the yellow sticker) is a timmy clone. i like it a lot. not convinced by the reliability, though- as i said, if it goes for silly money there's not much point. some stores in the US seem to be getting timmies into stock every so often, so if the danos are going for a premium these days, the real thing is probably a better idea.

Give it a go mate, see how you like it!

On mine I use the clean channel in crunch mode with Gain at about 9/11 and then when I need 'more' I hit the Boyes Boost. It really thickens up the sound and adds a little more gain. Reminds me very much of how Gary Moore used to use his SLOs on the Blues Alive album.

I'll have a look into that Dano pedal. I've heard a few people say that it's similar but haven't looked into them in too much detail myself.

will do- i haven't had a chance to try it yet, but i'll try it at some point

i'm not sure how close the v2 is to the timmy (the one with the black sticker). I think the v1 was a verified clone, though (on freestompboxes dot org), minus the clipping options (and obviously done on the cheap, lol). I doubt you'll find the v1 new (or new old stock) anywhere, though- i got mine a year or two back and I had trouble finding mine. and tgp-itis might have infected the second-hand prices

Nice catch  :D The Micro Terror really has me intrigued. I'm in no need of another amp, but as cheap as the micro my trigger finger is really itchy.

This looks like it might be a useful dual-purpose home/backup amp, something I've been considering for a while. Do those of you who've encountered it reckon it could be persuaded into metal territory with the addition of some pedal or other? If so, what sort of thing would it need? I've always been an amp gain an when it comes to metal.

There's some metal clips of the Micro Terrors on youtube where they're just fronting the amp with a tubescreamer to push it a bit more.

Just wondered if you'd had a go at swapping the valve in the micro terror? I imagine it's a cheap chinese valve and I'm wondering what difference it would make.
