Looking for a decent amp or half stack, any suggestions ?
« on: December 26, 2012, 08:58:28 PM »
I'm new to the site and i currently am on the lookout for a decent amplifier or halfstack to go with my Gibson SG Standard,at the moment i have a "Kustom Dual 35 DFX" which is a bit Meh,the sound i am looking for is AC/DC style and my amp just can't produce it nor is the clarity up to much either,i have owned a Marshall MG50 DFX in the past but that wasn't really all that great either, any suggestions would be appreciated Thanks.

What is your price limit and how loud can it be?

It is just for home use so not too loud maybe i should be looking for something in the lower watt range than what i have,i'm currently looking at a Peavey ValveKing 100w Head and ValveKing 4x12 Cabinet - Half stack that is going cheap at the moment but maybe that is way more than i need for home use LOL,i don't want to spend much to be honest like maybe £200 topzzz!!

Have you looked at the Laney LC15?

They're fairly nice little amps. They're pretty easy to mod into a low wattage JCM800 too

Yeah i've looked at those "Too Pricey" for my liking...for all i strive for AC/DC tones i like the early Oasis stuff too so i'm thinking Vox and Ibanez TS-9 Tubescreamer will give me the tones i'm looking for and with a little bit of cranking i'll maybe get close to the AC/DC Stuff

My thought too as I can get those with my TT easily, but one may not forget the Micro Terror.
Cheaper and still something to mess with. Really impressive for size and prize.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

+1: Get a used TT or a Dual Terror. But the Micro Terror with a decent cab will deliver the goodies too, at a budgetprice.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

those laney cubs are meant to have jcm800-style preamps. they're under £200. I haven't tried them, though. But might be worth considering.

Good call on the Micro terror. forgot all about those. They do sound great and get pretty darn loud if you need to, great for the price.

Jet City JCA 20? won't do over the top lead gain without a pedal but should give you the crunch you desire

I'd go with the JCA20 over the micro terror.

Thanks for the suggestions,if i go for something like a "Micro Terror" is it worth also investing in the Orange 1x8 20w 8' speaker cabinet ?
