Which PU's to go with a Hellraiser?
« on: January 05, 2013, 11:41:26 PM »
I've got a Schecter Hellraiser C-7 (mahogany neck and body, with maple top)
and I have grown tired of the active EMGs, so i'm looking for advice on which PU to go with
I play with really big chords, but I like my sound to be tight, articulate, not too bright and with a lot of mids and low end so the guitar really kan growl. My style of playing is a mixture of Deftones and Animals As Leaders.

Hoping somebody can give me a finger point of which direction to go!

miracle man or aftermath
definitely aftermath for those extreme animals as leaders licks, as it has a more articulate and strong finger/picking response, somewhat like actives, although I hate that sort of comparison
but the miracle man sounds deeper and more open and organic for most of deftones-like stuff

Judging from what i've seen on youtube and here on the website i think the MM is way to bright in the bridge position, and the AM too. But then again, i have never experienced the PU in real life, only on the web

All BKPs have somewhat of a brightness about them compared to other manufacturers. It is a quality of scatterwinding. I do not mean to say that they are all very bright, also their topends vary greatly in quality from piercing agressive to smooooth, but it always is there giving each PU definition and cut. Hard to describe really. Just as there really is no scooped BKP...well maybe the NB neck is the only exeption.

Anyways if you think those are way to bright there is not that much room to move. I think the Crawler and Black Dog are less bright, but they donīt really fit what you want, which really only leaves the Warpig....qutie the monster.

Thing is I am not sure they would really be too bright for you. The AM maybe, as it is middy as heck, but while the MM still retains quite some cut it growls in the lower mids like hell.

My gut tells me you are on the wrong track but I cannot really say....
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

well, they're definitely not too bright in mahogany, specially in such low tunings
they're very growly pickups
an alnico nailbomb would be darker, but wouldn't retain as much articulation and low end tightness

I have the 707's in both neck and bridge

If you listen to this, i think the AM is too bridge compared with the 707

also, the second riff he plays is somewhat simular to some of the stuff i play

the aftermath is brighter than a 707, but also notice the passive guitar has ebony board
guess you'll be fine with a miracle man

Your description fits an Aftermath very well, but at the same time I have a hunch that you want something slightly less hyper-tight. If you're doing a lot of start-stop riffing that requires IMMEDIATE volume drop, then the AM is an amazing PUP. I played a PRS HFS for awhile and just recently upgraded...or switched to the AM. The AM is a rather "cold" sounding PUP to me, and lacks a bit of dynamics that PAFs or my PRS PUPs had. The AMs also have a distinct "metallic" sound (hence the cold description I suppose). All that being said, I've noticed they also have a very distinct "tube-y" throaty sound when you dial in the right EQ, which is the exact tone I've been after for years; they also pick up (see what I did there!) on tapped notes than any other pickup I've had. I'm not joking when I say I tried tapping and it was like "Oh, so THATS how effortless it's supposed to be?!" Also the neck pickup is extremely smooth sounding, albeit does still have the "compressed" sound that you find in the bridge.

Regarding the "brightness" in the bridge, it's really not that noticeable and also depends on the wood and what you're playing through. I have mine in a mahogany body with a maple top and I think they sound perfectly balanced, not too dark, and certainly not shrill (stay away for the Painkiller btw, it's apparently VERY shrill).

Basically, the AM is gunna be the tightest PUP you'll find and gives you extreme note clarity regardless of the distortion levels. Also, they will show your technique, for better or worse. So if you're sloppy, they'll sound sloppy, or if you're tight they'll sound stellar.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned the Warpig or Blackhawk, and I personally have no experience with either PUP, but I've heard nothing but praise for either of them so I'd recommend checking some clips out of those

What about the Holydiver + VHII??
I've heard The Safety Fire and i am fascinated with their sound, but do you guys think it is too bright?

The Holydiver is a bit less bright than the Miracle Man but the Miracle Man is not overbright at all. It is a very good pickup but as all BKPs it is quite dependent on the guitar it's in. In my ash/maple neck + board strat it simply kills. Whether it's the best for the bands you mentioned I have no idea - I am not familiar with any of them.

I've read some reviews here on the site and on sevenstring, and from what i've read i have come down to the Black Hawk, Emerald or War Pig.
Since i care much about the looks of my guitar i would like to have covers on my PUPs, although i really dig the sound of the Black Hawk. But the Emerald sounds like it will fit my sound very good.

Any comments, and also thank you all for your inputs!

I am not familiar with the three pickups mentioned but going by the descriptions your shortlist includes pickups which seem to be very different from each other.

Very different to say the least. I believe the Emerald and Warpig are exactly oposite on the brightness spectrum.

Yeah Tim from BKP mentioned that they are to ends of the spectrum, i just don't get it becasue they both sound sweet on the sound clips
