Stupid question of the day.... getting covers removed.
« on: January 25, 2013, 04:53:01 PM »
Anyone had their humbucker covers removed (by BKP, not a DIY job)?

I'm just wondering if they come out nice and clean, or if they look a bit manky?

Short answer: no

but I'm going to answer you anyway :) if doing a DIY job (which you've already stated you don't want to do), you can dip the de-potted pickups in a hot wax bath to melt the wax around the pickup. The "manky" wax on the tops then melts and you can wipe it off.

Me neither as regards BKPs.  I have removed covers on other pickups but you would not want to know the details, let alone see me doing this :)

Cheers Stephan

I did remove a cover once (long ago before BKP), but getting rid of the wax looked like a disaster waiting to happen so I put the cover straight back on again.

Seriously, I can actually! You're handy technically - my wax bath consists of an empty tin, some kebab sticks and a saucepan of hot water. I've potted and removed covers on many pickups and its very straight forward.

The Feline option sounds good - they're not under BKP warranty because I wasn't the original owner.

This is contingent on me actually trying them in the Mockingbird to see if they're a good choice soundwise..... so see you in 2015 or so.  :D

(They're Cold Sweats, incidentally)

It's so I can suspend the tin of wax in the hot water without it touching the bottom of the saucepan

Yeah, I know, I'm probably being unrealistically optimistic, as usual....

they're usually easy to clean up
bkps aren't completely filled with wax like some other pickups
just a flannel is usually enough
