NCD MJW 2x10
« on: February 01, 2013, 07:34:00 PM »
Picked up my cab today from Martin to match the Ampmaker Double Six kit amp I built that he also did the cab for. I'll post a group shot tomorrow in daylight, they look awesome together.

It's a vertical 2x10. It's actually a slightly oversized 1x12 cab on it's end (a little wider) and by god does it sound good. Speakers are a pair of Eminence Legend 1028k. It sounds big and punchy as hell, and totally exceeds my expectations. I had another pair of 10" speakers I was going to try in there as I was worried the Legends might be a little thin. No such worries.

So you're fond of 10" speakers?

Is that the alnico magnet Legend? I was thinking of trying one, but I think it will not have anywhere near as much body & depth in a small 1x10 as in that cab which looks pretty big.

Yep, it's kind of a modernised version of a P10R if you believe the blurb.

I've read that they can be a little lacking if used on their own in smaller cabs. But pairs or quads in bigger cabs get very good write ups. It also helps that I got them stupidly cheap. Though that wasn't the main reason I got them. Will be interesting to hear them cranked tomorrow!

The cab is a little larger than he'd normally do a 2x10 as I wanted to run it on it's side and not look silly being narrower than the head. So it's wider to match the head.

I am now! I fancied a bit of a change. Sold my 1x12 with a plan to go 2x10.

The other things I'm having made are going to be a pair of 1x10 combos, one with my Goldstar in, the other with a matching Goldstar power amp. That way I can run them as a stereo pair. The reason I'm going 10" in those is purely to keep them small as space is tight. I've got a pair of Ragin Cajuns for those, I heard one in Tom's Princeton and thought it sounded brilliant. Apparently it loses it a bit when dimed, but these are home use, low volume jobs only, and at that sort of level it sounded marvellous.

Very cool amp. I had a Peavy 4x10 classic and really like the sound of the tens. This one gives me a GAS-attack.

Well I can confirm that as a pair, they rock. Loads of punch and sparkle and really suit the amp.

I tried to take better pics, but it seems a bit of a swine to photograph. I really needed a contrasting backdrop.

As I was over at Cleggys, I dragged all his amps over for a size comparison. They are from left to right: Goldstar and 1x12, DoubleSix and 2x10, the red thing at the back is an oversized 2x12 with a Jet City on top and there's a Laney Lionheart with a 2x12 at the front.
