That's far too interesting. http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-VES-Handbook-Visual-Effects/dp/0240812425/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361909278&sr=8-1 has a fascinating *cough cough* chapter in it about digital lighting and shading models by a forum member not a million miles from here. Who wouldn't want to be soothed to sleep reading about bidirectional reflectance distribution functions?

That's cool.  I particularly liked the chapter 'This page is intentionally left blank'.  Very post-modern. 8)

Just about finished (thank god) The Terror by Dan Simmons. Good story but it drags its arse a bit. Will probably re-read American Gods or Neverwhere next.

Dude, I recently read Drood and was ENTHRALLED by it; really loved the pacing, sense of atmosphere and the palpable dread it conjured up.

Picked up The Terror since it has a sort-of connexion to Drood, and was utterly disappointed! I think I got through 4 chapters before putting it down to rest. :)

I have had a love/hate thing with Simmons for some time; I love some of his ideas, but by and large I have always had issues with his books.

Stealing Speed.

Its straightforwardly written, but the story is great.

I started reading The Terror because I liked the fact it crossed the infamous Franklin expedition with old inuit folklore. Was a relief to finally finish it, but i am glad I did. Not sure I would pick up another Simmons book again though

Both Drood and the first Hyperion are worth your time.

Just spent the last week ploughing through Robert McCammon's Swan Song. Best book I have read in a long time. It's set in the US which has been devastated by nuclear war, it has some interesting supernatural elements to it as well. Anyone recommend  any other end of the world novels?

I have just finished the last two books in Swedish author Haaakan Nesser's crime series about inspector Barbarotti. Excellent writing and not you ordinary crime stories. Nesser is a brilliant writer and I have to read some more of his books.

I started reading Playing At The World: A History of Simulating Wars, People, And Fantastic Adventures. It is essentially a study on the history of ancient strategy games, how they evolved into modern wargames, how those in turn evolved into roleplaying games, and how roleplaying games influenced the development of video games.

Thus far, a fascinating read; highly recommended to anyone interested in this sort of thing.

The Passage by Justin Cronin is worth a read. I enjoyed it.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy is one of the best end of the world books I've ever read.

Thanks will give it a go. I couldn't put The Road down, the ending was somewhat lacking though, was a little dissapointed. Thought the film was garbage...

I finished the Wheel of Time series last month. I didn't really enjoy the Brian Sanderson books all that much, too many continuity errors, clunky prose and a myriad of other major and minor annoyances. I was still glad to read Robert Jorden's ending though.
It wasn't a mistake, it was chromaticism, I swear.
