Hi-gain / twang for Gibson SG '73
« on: May 20, 2013, 11:04:10 AM »
I have an SG '73 standard. Lots of mids when playing unplugged.

Currently I have the original humbucker (don't know which model) in the neck position, and a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge. The reason for the bridge pickup is because I love the sound from it in a Strat I have, but I was disappointed with it in the SG. It sounds too thin, and I have been told to get either Lollar Imperial or a pair Bare Knuckles, f.ex the Riff Raff.
I play through hi-gain Marshalls (DSL 100) and I want a tight sound, well defined mids and highs, transparent distortion (strings separate clearly). Sounds like 90's Green Day and that sort of thing.

What do you think should be my pickup of choice in the bridge?

And I miss my Fender twang in the neck position. Of course I could use my Fender for this, but when on the road it's not always ideal to bring too many guitars. Read some places that a set of P90s in the neck would do the trick. Any experiences with that on an SG anyone?

Hi and welcome!

Yeah for the bridge of a SG the riff raff is always a good choice I recon, though I am not too familiar with 90s greenday tones. It is just a PU that sits so well in SGs, I recon with proper amp settings and maybe the help of a pedal it can do just about anything somewhat.

As for the neck, P90s are a thing for themselfs. They do give you the full frequency response of a SC and a noticable spank, but always the fatness and power of a HB and a very characteristic growl. They can be a puma on crack or a nice purry little kitty if you want them to. Like em or not, but they are special.
They also work well in SGs from what I know, so you might wanne have a look at the Mississippi Queen neck, a brilliant little thing.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

RiffRaffs and Cold Sweats work nice in SG's, as far as I know. Maybe a VHII too.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
