Well I am not that much an expert on that sound as I want mine more old school, so I waited for someone else to chime in.
Possibilitys for that kind of sound from the modern range are the Nailbomb, the Miracle Man and the Blackhawk Iīd say, maybe the Painkiller, but that is another beast yet. The AM might be cool if you like a middy and dry as the desert sound.
However the three beforementioned would probably suit you better. The Nailbomb is very agressive in the mids and somewhat of a 90s metal feel, the MM has a character which is not actually scooped but can seem to be so (you donīt loose cut though as they are there, just not the prominent part of the voicing) and the Blackhawk seems to be a metal machine, but I donīt know too much about it.
Those three should be a great sample size.
I did actually overlook the SG before it seems, sorry about that. For that one I can help more not that much on the wiring, though a push pull with a 5 way like on a HSH guitar would be my choice (N, N+M,M,M+B,B plus splitting them all) for easy and versatile wiring. With Alnico II pus I would recommend you do the split only partial like PRS does (putting a resistor, 1-2,2k (or 3k) in series with the split so the coil is not completly off) so you can retain some output and fatness while getting al the character. This makes sense as vintage HB coils on their own are too weak for splits in essense. Not that it canīt work, but the other way works better imho.
Now I am guessing on what you play with the SG, but since you have alnico II PUs already in there you might wanne keep with that theme, so the PG blues or the stormy monday come to mind. Between those two I would listen to samples and see what you like more. To add a little variety maybe the stormy, but I donīt know how the ones you have sound so I canīt help as much there.
If I may suggest something else though, maybe think about a humbucker sized P90 in the middle. It has the power and fatness of a HB with the full frequency response and attack of a SC while having a certain growl you wonīt find anywhere else. That way you have in essense a supercharged HSH guitar. I would think this might add more versatility and a sound you will dig for sure.
Depending on how much the output of the rockingers is you might wanne go Mississipi Queen or ask BKP to make you a humbucker sized Blue Note (they usually will do this if you ask nicely and perhaps explain why this is for you), which I think would rock your world.
If you are interrested in this path shoot a mail to BKP and ask if they think it can work for you and if they would be willing to make it.
Hope this helps ;)
