Choosing BKP for Mayones SLE and vintage SG
« on: July 08, 2013, 08:40:35 AM »
Hi! I need help for choosing pickuo set for 2 my guitars
1. Need pickup set for Mayones Setius Limited Edition
- mahogane body + FMT
- mahogany + maple neck (5 pieces)
- ebony fretboard
- piezo Graphtech

This guitar plays hi gain drop b music

2. I have a Gibson SG Standard 1967
There are two Rockinger Alnico II Custom Neck / Bridge pickups
I need put third pickup in the middle position (SG standard bodies of 60s has 3 pups routing in stock)
 - What is a pickup may i setup in the middle position between 2 rockinger pups?
 - I like a single coil mode. Will be it possible with 3 pups? What kind of switch selector can i use - 6 position (like a SG3), or 3 position with push-pull, 6 position with push pull (i like it so much) , maybe something else?

Thanking in advance

Hi and welcome.

Before we can recommend anything you will need to tell us what kind of style you play exactly and what kind of tone you are after.
"hi gain drop b music" for example can be done very well by more PUs than you might expect. ;)
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

It's hard to know what you are looking for exactly without more info but just to encourage you to think outside the box have you considered a humbucker size P90 like the Mississippi Queen in the centre spot?

You can probably wire it to run off the centre switch in a similar way to the Gibson G3 bass, i.e., centre position on the switch is all three pickups, neck position is neck + centre, bridge is bridge + centre, with some kind of push-pulls or push-pushes to allow other options.

Well I am not that much an expert on that sound as I want mine more old school, so I waited for someone else to chime in.

Possibilitys for that kind of sound from the modern range are the Nailbomb, the Miracle Man and the Blackhawk Iīd say, maybe the Painkiller, but that is another beast yet. The AM might be cool if you like a middy and dry as the desert sound.
However the three beforementioned would probably suit you better. The Nailbomb is very agressive in the mids and somewhat of a 90s metal feel, the MM has a character which is not actually scooped but can seem to be so (you donīt loose cut though as they are there, just not the prominent part of the voicing) and the Blackhawk seems to be a metal machine, but I donīt know too much about it.
Those three should be a great sample size.

I did actually overlook the SG before it seems, sorry about that. For that one I can help more not that much on the wiring, though a push pull with a 5 way like on a HSH guitar would be my choice (N, N+M,M,M+B,B plus splitting them all) for easy and versatile wiring. With Alnico II pus I would recommend you do the split only partial like PRS does (putting a resistor, 1-2,2k (or 3k) in series with the split so the coil is not completly off) so you can retain some output and fatness while getting al the character. This makes sense as vintage HB coils on their own are too weak for splits in essense. Not that it canīt work, but the other way works better imho.

Now I am guessing on what you play with the SG, but since you have alnico II PUs already in there you might wanne keep with that theme, so the PG blues or the stormy monday come to mind. Between those two I would listen to samples and see what you like more. To add a little variety maybe the stormy, but I donīt know how the ones you have sound so I canīt help as much there.

If I may suggest something else though, maybe think about a humbucker sized P90 in the middle. It has the power and fatness of a HB with the full frequency response and attack of a SC while having a certain growl you wonīt find anywhere else. That way you have in essense a supercharged HSH guitar. I would think this might add more versatility and a sound you will dig for sure.
Depending on how much the output of the rockingers is you might wanne go Mississipi Queen or ask BKP to make you a humbucker sized Blue Note (they usually will do this if you ask nicely and perhaps explain why this is for you), which I think would rock your world.
If you are interrested in this path shoot a mail to BKP and ask if they think it can work for you and if they would be willing to make it.

Hope this helps ;)

I'm not sure about the SG but for the Setius I can definitely recommend the Blackhawks. They will work extremely well for what to want. I'd personally get the Alnico bridge but that's just preference really. Depends on whether you want that fatter mid-range hump.

The Miracle Man would also work pretty well, I think.

Really?
I thought about Aftermath humbucker set for Setius .. Do you believe that blackhawks are pretty evil and more modern?
As paf tone HB i wanna try The Mule for SG's middle position
What do you think about it?

For the SG with the Rockinger Alnico II pickups I would go with a Stormy Monday neck pickup for the middle position as it's also Alnico II and a lower output winding. Therefore it should balance well with the existing pickups.

No idea on the Low B tuned guitar, unfortunately.

Cheers Stephan

In my opinion, for the type of music that you demonstrated, the Blackhawk is a better bet than the Aftermath.
The aftermath is a very middy and extremely tight sounding pickup with far more mids and treble than bass. It's more of a Djent pickup to be honest.

The Blackhawk can also do Djent if that's what you want (Periphery have been using them a lot lately) but it's far more versatile and sounds a lot like what you demonstrated in the clip.

I've got Blackhawks in my Mayones Regius 7, so I have a good idea of what they'll sound like for you.

I've got a small section about the pickups in my NGD thread that you might want to read:
