I don't think I have the height right just yet, I might be too close to the strings to get that definition you are talking about Kiichi, but I'll give it some more turns of the screwdriver tomorrow. It's only been in two completely random positions so far. The first, much lower, sounded a bit weak, as you might expect. It was just wherever it ended up when I installed it, and was just done by eye to somewhere that looked vaguely like where the old one sat. Tonight I raised the the bass side three full turns at least and the treble side probably four or five, and it's much more aggressive now but I think could be clearer. I'll try moving it down a little tomorrow. Once I've got it roughly right I'll have a look at the pole pieces, but I'm guessing a 12" radius to match the fretboard would do the trick, or at least serve as a good starting point.
I love aggressive, heavy tones so I'm very happy. The riffing really got an extra kick when I raised the pickup. When I had it lower I found it a bit lacklustre but I knew that it wasn't set properly. I didn't even bother trying to adjust the height until I had a chance to sort the truss rod and bridge out first, because pickup height is always relative to bridge height.
