I''ve also heard it claimed that "top wrapping" makes string bending easier.... but may reduce sustain. I don't know if either of those things are true.
On the other hand, it means you can screw the tailpiece studs right down flush with the body and still have the strings at a reasonable angle behind the bridge, which seems like it might be a good thing. I never like the way the studs sit really high in the bushings on a lot of LPs.
