Magazines
« on: February 17, 2014, 10:52:54 PM »
So I was waiting around Victoria Station in London waiting to meet someone and decided to have a look in WH Smiths for the first time in a LONG time. I haven't bought a guitar magazine for a very very long time so I thought I'd see if there were any in there. I couldn't find any! Sometimes a work colleague will pick one up and bring it to work and leave it for me to read.

Anyway. Got me think, I'm sure this topic has come up before but does anyone still buy magazines or does everyone rely on youtube content or forums now for reviews and such? I must admit, I do check the Tone King out from time to time. Sometimes he has something interesting on their. Other that premier guitars videos seem helpful.

What do you look at?

I read Vintage Guitar magazine as a physical object posted to me from the States, which I think is the best mag out there, especially if you have an interest in the history of the instrument. I read Guitarist and Guitar World on the iPad and I skim both. It's much cheaper on the iPad than buying the print editions and, if I had to pay what the print editions cost online, I wouldn't bother. Otherwise YouTube covers most of what I need, plus the links posted on knowledgable forums like this this one.

I much prefer the tone I get from swapping out metal magazines on my Colt M16A2 assault rifle, the low mids are just so much more organic sounding as opposed to plastic polymer magazines although being able to see the amount of rounds you have left is a very useful feature.

Oh wait I think I'm posting in the wrong part of the internet again.

The Tone King has actually made a useful video?

I did find some guitar magazines in Victoria a while back. The missus was urging me to get one "if I wanted" .... But I was so shocked/horrified at the price of what basically seemed to be a load of adverts... I decided to buy a nice book instead (and some chocolate with the money left over)

I read and subscribe to Guitar and Bass magazine, but it's the only 1 I read nowadays.

Ooops! Schoolboy error!

I'd say Tone King has some useful videos. He tends to get excited about new gear and every so often will have something I won't know about that I might then research a bit. More so than the Andertons lot even if TK ain't the best player. Total Guitar was the mag I got a when I got any.

I subscribe to Guitarist and Guitar and Bass.  I still like getting them, even if pretty much all the information is available online, in forums and company websites.  I'm just old fashioned I suppose :) .  The price of print magazines is extortionate though.  When Guitarist stopped including a CD, you'd have thought the price would have dropped.

I cancelled my subscriptions a couple of years ago as I was running out of space and they seemed to be recycling the same old guff. I've seen an odd issue here and there if I got one for my birthday or something like that  I'm pretty much with blue, though... even though I knew I was pretty much getting ripped, I still enjoyed it. The space was the main thing. EDIT: also I probably liked guitar buyer best and it stopped, which sucked.

I really liked Guitar Buyer.... the mag was good and the photography was superb - Eckie is a great photographer.

I get subs copies of Guitarist and Guitar and Bass since I advertise in them, and I still have a soft spot for Guitar and Bass whilst Guitarist continues along the pathway that it always has....although there has been a staff cull in recent times.

I have to make sure I throw them out at the end of the month or else I end up running out of space.

I do enjoy Premier Guitar which I get via my iPad, so space is not an issue - till my memory runs low on the iPad.

I still buy - and collect - the following:

Guitarist
Guitar and Bass
Guitar Player
Guitar World

I was sort of contemplating dropping GW this year, since it basically just features loads of articles about American roclk/metal bands I've never heard of going on tour together.  And the equipment reviews are, and always have been, rubbish.  And the price has gone up to £5.70!  But I've carried on buying it.

I don't suppose this is surprising anyone much....  :|
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I always have a skim through Total Guitar whenever in WHSmiths when it comes out. I buy like one issue a year lol.

And yeah I can find out alot of info online, I just don't have the storage space to keep a batch load of magazines around the house, as good reading material they'll make for students when waiting for their lesson!

I stopped buying Guitarist when they ceased with the CD though that was an excuse I gave myself because I'd become a bit fed up prior to that. I occasionally buy Guitar Techniques if they have something in there that catches my attention but by and large, I don't bother any more. I refuse to buy an Ipad to read them that way- Mrs 38th does have a tablet thing but it isn't an Apple jobby but I haven't bothered to see if they do a version for that.
