well put it this way.
I have NO love for locking trems whatsoever!!!!!!!!
Don't care if it's floyd,schaller.

Time taken to restring is a beeatch!!!!

I prefer hardtails.
Having said that, the Axis I have has got a "Vintage Trem" which is non locking. Strings through body, over trem, into locking tuners. Have yet for it to go outta tune. But then I am not a Vai squeel demon or anything.

Horses for courses but I prefer the KISS method. NOT Gene/Paul etc. lol but Keep It Simple Stupid.

the tuners are lockers. Basically the trem acts as a kind see/saw.
Wilkinson tremolos are same principle if ya wanna research.
Or go maybe to Carvin or Ernie Ball boards as both those can come with this type of trem.

The Axis, for example, is locking. The Axis super sport is "vintage" trem.

If its all well lubed etc, graphite nut and saddles, then the strings should return to their normal positions/tensions easily enough.

what i'm saying is, if you want a super strat, you NEED to have one with a good trem, or you might as well not bother. I found out this the hard way. Luckily, my two super strats' cavities will fit a Gotoh/OFR/Schaller, but the studs are too small, so I'm going to have to get them drilled out.

the only way to tell for sure is to get the measurements of a good trem (www.floydrose.com, or email schaller, or wdmusicproducts.co.uk about the gotoh), and then measure the guitar. Also, it's a false ecomnomy, because odds are you can get a guitar with a good trem cheaper than a guitar with poor trem plus the cost of a decent trem (and the guitar with the good trem is probably a better guitar too!).

I don't see why you couldn't get a second hand super strat with a good trem for around £200, when the ibanez s470 and washburn x40 pro go for about £350 new. But if you can't, I advise to try to calm down your GAS (I know it's hard, lol, i have GAS too!) till you can get £350 together.

hmmmmm. most of the sub-£200 superstrats have licensed trems or the like.... gonna keep watching closely on ebay for the odd few that have decent ones.... thanks for the tip-off on the gotoh e.t.c..... might go and try a few ibanez' and that washburn in machinehad soon....

oh yeah, btw, how do you know about machinehead??!?!!

^i think i saw an ad in a guitar mag once (or loads of times, lol).

But yeah- not all licensed floyds are bad- just most are.

Schaller and Gotoh are good, and ibanez too, but you have to be VERY careful with ibanez, because some are good and some aren't, and they look almost identical. You really have to know what you're looking for.

okay cheers for the info... gonna bear that in mind....

i think from now on im gonna make choices from playability and general feel of a guitar instead of looks and even sound because i know that by slinging in a pair of BK's i can make most axes sound great....

when i try the washburns and ibanez' im looking for the feel of the neck, the control layout, the top fret access e.t.c...

i guess to most people this is probably what they would usually do but im still learning....

All I know is that I prefer the feel of Jackson necks to Ibanez, which feel too wide and flat. Try some Jacksons, you might like em  :D

^i prefer ibanez to jackson lol- but i like both!

If you are going to whack in some BK's, check how the guitar sounds unplugged (you should do this anyway)- if the wood is good and resonant, a pickup change will be that much more sweet!

mmm true.... really, i dont care as long as it stays in tune reasonably well... i havent had much experience with trems so wouldnt know the difference... i know what your saying dave.... even my mates JEM goes out of tune like a bitch and is a lot of trouble....

I have a Jem and had really bad tuning trouble but I figured out what it was after reading Ibanezrules.com. During the late 90s the knife edges on the trems were made slightly blunter than usual, to make them last longer, also the groove in the post was quite narrow, this is a bad combination for tuning! I filed my knife edges slightly as per the info on ibanezrules and bingo, a major improvement! I'll wager your mates Jem was made during this period.
