i NEED a super strat...
« on: March 16, 2006, 10:10:10 PM »
ok my mate got his washburn kc(unknown number) chicago series, with no serial number (= US custom shop)... after some research we think weve deciphered that chicago series= much more valuable than non-chicago series..... are we right? either way... i love it... so.. SOOO much and really wish i had been able to get the cash myself instead of my mate getting it... grrrrrr..... well at least i get to see it now lol.....

anyway..... ive decided, to complete my guitar arsenal- acoustic, les paul, all-valve amp.... i need a super-strat to cover another part of the spectrum..... any advice on good CHEAP ones? also if theres any second hand ones in shops near anyone in the UK let me know.... i may be able to get near £200 fairly soon, not a big budget i know... but i really want one now.... looking for a bargain basically.....

any ideas at all?

also, something a bit out of the ordinary if possible....

on the off chance- if anyones tried some random super-strat style guitar recently and liked it... let me know lol... IM DESPERATE!

you want to be very careful with super strats, sambo- the cheaper ones can have cr@ppy double locking trems that won't hold tuning very well, won't have good sustain, and will generally be more bother than they're worth.

Machinehead are selling a washburn x40pro for £379, with a schaller trem (good!), and duncan pickups (distortion and '59, i think). Not as good as BK's, but much better than most pickups on guitars of that price, and good enough that you wouldn't have to rush out and immediately upgrade. I haven't tried it, but going by specs, it should be good, unless it was made by an arm-less monkey. Only reason I didn't go for one is it's 42mm nut width, I prefer 43mm. Alder body.

The Ibanez s470 is also worth a look- has a zr trem, which is good, although i tried one (unplugged) and thought it played well (43mm nut, lol), but i've heard that the quality control isn't so great, so you'd want to try it. Around £340, i think. Pickups won't be great (it's an Ibanez, lol). Mahogany body.

If you can get a little more, an ibanez rg1570 would be worth a look. Again, pickups won't be great, but, if you get one of last years, it's japanese-made, edge pro trem (good!), super fast neck. basswood body, though, so it's very much voiced for shred. the 1570 would be my pick, but that's me. Also, if you go second hand, a 570 is basically the same thing, but with an edge bridge (good, again).

What type of tone are you after with it? Superstrats rock, by the way, I love them. :B

You should maybe have put this in the guitars forum, too :D

do you care one way or another about a trem sam?

I am thinking, older, ESP,Jackson,Kramer,Charvel,B.C.Rich (but need to research some).

Whats your "want" list bearing in mind price? i.e. pup config., trem, case etc.

preferably a humbucker in there somewhere.... not keen on all 3 single coils..... apart from that no pickup selection preference....

im clueless when it comes to trems but hopefully something other than a copy or licensed one would be good....

case couldnt care less about ill probably break the guitar in a week or so anyway lol....

and yer, older is the way to go i think...

OH that last one was brill!!!!

also to add to that ^ yer some kind of trem is important- almost essential...
