Recommendations for my '85 Fender Strat?
« on: May 15, 2005, 12:38:16 PM »
Hi,
First of all - I'm very impressed with the sound clips on the site. All the pickups sound fantastic and I've never read a bad review about them!

Now my question: I have a mid eighties Fender Strat (ash body I think), 1 HB, 2 singles. The pickups are mounted on the scratch plate. I've found that the HB sounds 'thin' when I compare it to a friends BC RIch with a Seymore Duncan Trembucker. Music wise I'm into Ozzy, Black Sabbath and ,of course, Van Halen. I'm looking for a pickup that will give the guitar a fuller sound and stronger tone on the leads, oh and, more sustain (I lose some as the pickups aren't mounted on the body). While I love Zakk Wyldes playing I'm not after the all out sound that he gets (so that takes Miracle Mans out of the list!) - to my ears he sounds a little clipped on the leads.

My initial thoughts are either VHII or Warpigs.........

Any suggestions, recommendations greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

PS I'm playing through a Line 6 - crunch setting.

A VH2 will get you a good Eddie sound but I think that it wouldn't be right for Ozzie and Sabbath stuff. I think a Crawler will get you a convincing Eddie sound as well as a good Sabbath tone. You have an ash guitar so you shouldn't get an overly bright sounding pickup. There's a Crawler/mothers milk demo in the players section wich I really like, might be worth checking out.

Oh yeah, and welcome to the forum! :drink:

I think that you may be making a mistake to rule out the Miracle Man
It isn't just Zakk tone- there is a lot more to this pickup than just ZW.

I suspect that a Nailbomb may also be a contender too.
The Crawler will help your strat sound like a Les paul too

Hi,
Thanks for the replies! Decisions, decisions...I think I have 2 choices:

1. Buy more guitars and get one of each
2. Persuade Tim to stop having such a good range and only sell 1 type

I've been very relieably informed that option 1 would get a divorce, whereas option 2 would probably end up with me being lynched by guitarists everywhere. Life's full of difficult choices!

I'm going to have another listen tonight of the demo clips that everyone has posted - hopefully I'll be able to make my mind up from that.

Thanks!

Hey wwwales, there's also some good clips of the crawler in the products section. They're played by Geoff himself. SWEEEEET! 8)

I go along with all the above comments, although I must say Steve's Nailbomb demo on his HSS strat takes some beating for what you're after.
