They don't really do cleans that well at all.

+1

I wouldn't say they're purely metal, though- metal and hard rock, maybe.

you really have to try the amps, sambo.

^laney tt50 combo would be worth a look too- it's about £670 new, you'd assume second hand it'd be in your price range

Hey Sam, if you like Vox clean sounds (I do too), you might like a Fender amp.  You'll need a good distortion pedal with most Fender amps, though, if you wanna do anything with more gain than blues.

Here are some eBay links you might be interested in:

Trace Elliot Amp

Orange Amp

Hughes and Kettner Amp

Another Trace Amp

Marshall JCM 900

Fender Blues Deluxe

Whatever you do, get some new tubes.  You'll be surprised how much decent tubes can breathe life into a cr@ppy amp, quite often.

Hmm, 5150?? no tone?

Sorry, ive played many amps, many boutique amps, and a 5150 has one of the best overdrives ive had the pleasure of hearing.

and if you want to play metal.. it sounds a damn lot more tonefull than a Mesa dual rect.. Engl' powerballs sound like them in the high gain teritory, though i find them a little darker.

We were discussing the cleans as not being that good not the overdrive. I'm sure 5150 overdrive is fantastic.

so which model have you got johhny?

I've got the Powertone II.

I'd get down to machinehead and just try some amps out with your guitar, so you get a good idea of what your pups are going to sound like.
If MH are only 15 minutes from you I'd just put all the other stuff behind you.

:? I wouldn't say they were cr@p Tom, they have been around a long time. One bad experience doesn't make a dealer cr@p, they get some great gear there and do some good deals on certain brands too.
