Crunch over OD?
« on: August 29, 2015, 12:57:29 PM »
I've been playing my 6505+ head for a couple of years now and I love it. Nice attack, endless gain and a low end thump that sounds great in drop c tuning.

On the downside, its very noisy being a high gain setup. I normally use the lead (red) channel with the pre-gain on 3.5/4 boosted with a tubescreamer and if I turn up some of the levels too high the guitar starts to feedback. This is tamed by an ISP decimator. I have a high output pickup (ceramic nailbomb) as well.

Been considering using the rhythm (green) channel with the crunch button pushed in and the pre-gain on 5/6 and also the tubescreamer to boost. Many say you get a punchier clearer tone that is on par if not better than the lead channel. With such a high gain pickup this may work out.

Do any of you use the 'crunch' channel on amp instead of the full on overdrive? I don't really do solos in this band so no need to really leap out in the mix. Just need to hear myself and sit nicely in the mids with the bass and drums.

It all depends on the amp. On Marshalls DSL/TSL/JVM i find the lead channels way too overgained and fizzy so I use the crunch and give it a gentle nudge with a treble booster or OD.

my other amps such as the SLO & MKIIC+ I wouldn't dream of using the crunch mode.

It's too nasal for me. If rather roll the volume back on the lead.

Plus the clean is more useful

I've seen some video where a djent guy was using the crunch on the rhythm channel of a 6534+ or 6505+ in much the way you are describing.  Pretty sure it was a 6534+

Yeah like for recordings its common for the rhythm channel to be used with an overdrive pedal pushing it a bit. Makes for a fatter clearer sound. Even when I recently recorded I used a 5150 on the green channel with the crunch button pushed in with a tubescreamer driving it in front. Sounded great and we didn't touch the lead channel.

Also seen a few "heavy" bands recently swap their Orange heads or other sort of modern high gain amp for a JCM800, again driven by an overdrive pedal. And it sounds fat! As a JCM800 is an amp that needs to be cranked to get that power, its great for using live.
