NGD . i've got the PRS fever...
« on: February 09, 2016, 10:38:07 PM »
well a while back i was looking to find a sister for my 53/10 and after a LOT of research and consideration i decided to grab this beauty from Wildwood Guitars (excellent people by the way). i love this guitar already. plays even nicer than my 53/10 which is hard to believe but you can't say no to the rosewood neck. this guitar was on consignment and 7ish years old and honestly, this could pass as brand new. it is immaculate. wildwood took some pics. i took some pics. heres a small album. let me know what you think! the only thing i could wish is that it had a trem for a bit of versatility but i'm not complaining. i'll just have to step up my vibrato game some more.

videos! first one is the amazing demo/review from greg koch at wildwood guitars and 2nd is a quick video from me that i did tonight (dont worry, its not synced at first but it syncs later in the video)

and now for the pickups. to swap or not to swap?

so far i'm enjoying the pickups a decent amount but i'm considering BK's. i've been wanting to go back to the lower output pickups as a whole lately and these ones are more medium output i'd say and not as warm as i'd like. for example, i'd gladly go with another set of 10th anniversaries if i could. love the set i have in my 335. i was also considering the seymour duncan 78 pickup which is said to emulate EVH. also its alnico 2 like the 10th anniversarys. i have NO experiences with the stormies or pg blues pickups. but i know i want something that will sound warm and work nicely with these tone woods ( mahogany body, maple top, all rosewood neck). any thoughts? i'm not turning the mule away but i didnt love it in the 335 back in the day. but then again that guitar didnt like any pickup until the 10th's were put in. i'd also consider the riff raffs but not sure if i want to go with a5 magnets... also i'm weary about the vh2s only because i did not like em in my LP custom which had similar woods. and i dont know much about the black dogs. i think the black dogs are closest to the 59/09 pickups that are currently in there now with that mid range presence. anything other than the pickups i mentioned i fear will be a little too hot for my liking lately. i'm just going to be playing you're standard rock and bluesy stuff but i'd like it to be able to handle gain well.

I just want to take a nosedive into that top!!!! Congrats!

I would consider the PG blues for this actually. The Stormy is a great too, but closer to the 10th. That can be a good thing, but if you care to keep a similar spirit while mixing things up a bit for versatility that could be a great path to go down.

That is simply gorgeous. If I wanted a PAF feel in that I think I'd be looking at either PG Blues or Mules. I might also look at Abraxas if I wanted more power in the bridge.

Wow!! Congrats!

Absolutely stunning

It's difficult now with the PRSs, I think the 5X/XX-series really suits the guitars. I personally love the 59/09s in my Custom 24, so I have never really felt I needed to replace them. And I have a set of 57/08s laying about as an alternative, and those would be KILLER for your guitar. I love them in them in my McCarty Singlecut. It sounds like the Stormy monday would be a good choice if you want a PAF inspired tone with a focused midrange.

Awww.... that's nice, very nice.

Stormy Mondays. I tend not to consider PG Blues because I like the "middle position" you get with standard humbucker configuration - but that's with Two volumes and Two tones, you can get LOADS of variation out of that.

As this has got (I assume) a single volume and tone - maybe the PG Blues might be more attractive? At the moment, I'm getting used to my new SG with it's 57 Classics - what I'm finding is that with both sets of controls roughly equal, the middle isn't much to write home about. It seems that it's when there's a mismatch, especially volume, when the magic starts to occur.

So maybe PG Blues with a guaranteed different sound in the middle might be the way to go? It would be a bit of a punt for me though - I'm so fond of the standard middle sound. I'm far more likely to go Stormies :)

that's a little bit nice :)   I tend to think quilted maple only looks good on the odd guitar, but that is definitely one of the odd ones!

Yep, I'd agree with that!! I often don't like quilted, but this just looks righteous.

A stunner- very nice indeed. I have no experience of owning a PRS or of BK humbuckers so I'd be a bit of a quandary however that would, be a lovely puzzle to consider. Congratulations.

I get what you are saying Andy, the PG middle is something else. Might not be for you, but for me it would be, as I never liked a double HB middle till the 10th came around. All others I would rather have HSH or use autosplit Petrucci wiring. Or just have a P90 in there. About to give the RY set another shot once I put em in another axe, but my hopes are limited for me. That is why the PG appeals to me.

Btw, favorite non in between position remains split HB plus single coil. Hard to balance, but when you do it is glorious imho.

can confirm about the middle position on the 10th anniversarys being great. every tone i squeeze out of those things is amazing. one song i wrote this past year utilized a lot of different sounds from those pickups. some neck, some middle, some bridge. some tone rolled off and i couldnt be happier.

heres the track for the curious.

as for the PG's can't you get them wired normally? i recently watched a demo with them and the owner said they were not wired like peter greens typical setup

Fabulous guitar, a beautiful PRS by even PRS standards.

What tonal qualities do you feel the rosewood neck adds? I wonder if that would colour your pick-up choices somewhat?

i'm sure it does but i'm not exactly sure how yet. if both my prs's had the same pickups it would be easier to tell
