whats the deal with midi...is it the best wy of creating patches if you use multiple stomp boxes?

Also, do you need a midi compatible amp?

Yes, from what I know, the amp does have to be midi compatable!

And once you obtain multiple stomp boxes that need to be changed on and off, midi is the way to go, unless if you want to be dancing on stage. In some situations, the switching is impossible without it!

It is possible to switch a non midi amp using a midi board. The pedal it self has to have the same kind of inputs ( most amps have jacks which switch the channels ). You can save these as patches ( on or off on the jack ) while also switching midi controlled effects etc.

You would need more than just a MIDI controller to do any kind of intricate switching; you will need a controller (I use a Roland FC-200), as well as a MIDI-controllable switcher, and probably a looper as well.

Not all switchers are created equally, though -- some are not instantaneous.

This kind of rig can also be very expensive. My foot controller cost $400 alone.

Definitely really expensive......but worth it if you're serious about your tone and easy contolling for serious gigging.
