Ragnaroks for a new guitar
« on: December 01, 2018, 04:55:31 AM »
Hey guys,

I have room in my small house for one more guitar, and as my other two guitars have lower output pickups in them, I was planning on getting something at least a little bit hotter. I'm really intrigued by the Ragnaroks -- they seem to clean up exceptionally well for a high output ceramic!

This is probably the craziest idea you've heard all day if not all week.  I don't really play too much metal anymore, but now and then I will turn the gain up. So anyway, I was considering an Ibanez Jiva10 as my new addition as it has a slightly thicker neck than other Ibanez's which is a requirement for me which is a mahogany body with a maple top. Has anyone ever played Zappa-esque leads on their Ragnarok? It seems like it might get that late 70s or early 80s attack that Frank had nicely which would be cool without the use of a compressor.

My primary amp currently is a '6 Super Reverb, silverface but an early one with the blackface circuit and I use a Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret when I want a Marshall-esque overdrive and a Hughes & Kettner Tube Factor when I want a more neutral overdrive. Although I plan on buying a Hughes & Kettner combo fairly soon as well, which has a lot more gain out of the box and is more in the metal territory. I would also get coil splits as they seem to split exceptionally well.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.

I'm intrigued too, it's a darn hot pickup but the classic rock sample is quite convincing. I even like the cleans. They're more hifi and less organic than say a Mule, yet seem to be pretty useable. Even the splitted tones are passable. Mind you, the Ragnarok will hit your preamp way harder than anything you own now.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I'm also curious. I'm waiting for a pair of Rags for my swamp ash multiscale 8 stringer. I hope I did no wrong ordering them. I use a EVH 5153 and I play mostly metal, but I'd like them to be versatile and not as loud as my other bkps. I ordered them blindly so I'm a bit scared they aren't too much output for my amp and settings.

The EVH got tons of gain, so I'm curious how a superhot pickup works in your rig.

I'm not too worried about hitting my preamp harder tbh. I have a Marshall Studio 15, and that amp hates single coils and lower output humbuckers but a hot pickup should make that come to life, if nothing else. Although I do plan on trading it for a Hughes & Kettner combo someday

Even using just a third of the gain roll I'm sometimes overwhelmed by my former pickups, the Cpig and the Juggs. My tone is rad, and my bandmates both hate and envy the amp because of so much mids but I must be very careful to play clean, every little right hand move makes unwanted noises and everything is so tight and crushing I should probably have bought alnico pups or something to compensate longer scale trebble plus this already trebblish amp.
