"Epic" metal demo ... VHII, Cold Sweat, Trilogy
« on: April 24, 2006, 01:59:37 AM »
This is a songwriting demo I just completed. The guitar tracks feature a few BK pups (Cold Sweat, VHII, and Trilogy Suite) in two guitars. All rhythm and lead guitars used the same mic'ing scheme, I just accented the '57 for the solos. (Pictures of mic setup below)

Clean gitars are Splawn Quick Rod 1st Gear
Rhythm guitars are Splawn Quick Rod 2nd Gear
Lead guitas are Splawn Quick Rod 3rd Gear
HBE CPR compressor on all guitars

No EQ added, just guitar > HBE CPR > Splawn Quick Rod; a bit of reverb was added to the clean guitars to give them a bigger image.

Thanx to PhilKing for the use of his nylon string guitar, as well as the use of his kitchen to do the recording! And thanx to Phil for the loan of his '74 Ric for the bass tracks. (Bass was tracked with a Korg PXR-4)

Drums as Drumkit from Hell, GM kit. Strings are East West Symphony Orchestra.

Mixed in Cubase.

I like the symmetry of the piece as well as the recording of the clean parts (and the playing on the solos! Woo!).  As this is for a songwriting demo it shouldn't matter but the drums sound somewhat robotic and it drew me out of the music to some extent.  Please note this criticism is coming from a midi moron who doesn't have a clue how to program drums but desperately wants to.  It's a fairly lengthy song but didn't feel like it.  2 thumbs up.

The working title is Outlanders. Lyrically, it's little on the offbeat side, more in line with songs we've done like Gift of the Southern Oracle and Near Dark.

Well, there are 3 songs 100% done as of now. We will road test them this Summer and see how they hold up, but I think they are definites for the next CD.

I plan on tracking band demos of the songs this Summer @ SIR; will probably do 2-3 songs, live drums/guitar, and overdub everything else.

At the same time, we're gonna keep writing new stuff. Probably won't go into the studio with a whole new batch of tunes until some time in 2k7.

There are a few more BKs I want to get before then, as well. (Holy Diver, Crawler, Black Dog ...)

Thanx, Lifted. My bottom cab is a Hiwatt.

The clean bit in the beginning is the VHII.
All of riffing and soloing once it gets heavy is the Cold Sweat, just used different settings on the amp, and emphasized the '57 over the 319.
The harmony part is the Trilogy Suite.
