High output P90 suggestions

Been looking at a Supermassive, Stockholm, and maybe the boot camp brute force for a dual soap bar guitar (not sure which guitar yet, I have a Collings 290dc that is probably the best fit).

I currently have a Nantucket set and love it.  It’s got great harmonic overtones, classic P90 grind, and is very versatile.  What I’m looking for is a P90 set that is a bit beefier with fatter mids and a bit more bass. 

Anyone tried the whole range and is willing to give some feedback?  I’m tempted by the Stockholm due to the output but worry that it might get muddy with higher gain or volume.  I’m also disappointed that the brute force clips are a pretty different style of music then the clips for the SM and Stockholm, so I cant really tell how it stacks up.  Also the clip for the brute force showcases some fantastic playing but I think hearing the pup in a music style that’s probably got that compression TS noise gate thing going on doesn’t tell me much above the pickups.  When heavily distorted it’s pretty tough to know what you’re going to get.

Anyway, any feedback is appreciated on any of those pups.

I have the Stockholm and haven't noticed any mud.

The only issue I've had is hum.  It certainly has more bottom end than a stock Gibson P-90

I used to be in a d-beat punk band, playing Discharge sort of stuff.  Hence the SG Junior

I've used it for noodling around at home though, and played clean stuff on it plenty of times.  Just not in a band context.  I played it through a Peavey 6534+ (lead channel), so you can probably imagine that I had some feedback to deal with.  Generally though after shielding the guitar and learning to stand with my body between the guitar and the amp it was fine

Ok so you mean real “feedback” and not 60 cycle hum, yeah?

How does the pickup sound clean?  Would you be willing to use it for classic rock or something where you wand some grind but not totally punk or metal?

The 60 cycle hum might cause the feedback.  All I know is that the P-90 acts a bit like a big antenna

Yeah I would totally use it for classic rock. You can knock the output down a bit with the volume knob

They feedback a bit quicker close to the amp and due to the big single coil they pick up more noise than a humbucker. I would go Supermassive here. It will do classic rock very well, but can handle heavier styles with authority. You clean it up with the volumepot, like Dave suggests.

Yeah I guess so, if you want really close to Angus's sound use the Riff Raff, but any SG will get close if you tweak the knobs.  SGs can all sound like AC/DC depending on playing style and settings.

Look at Phil-X. He uses a P90 from clean to balls out, just by using the volumepot. Supermassive or Stockholm are a good choice. For AC/DC: turn the volumepot a bit down. You might have to adjust the amp's eq a bit.

Not sure if I’m following but I looked at his YouTube stuff and only saw him playing a SG with a HB.  I think the concern with the Stockholm for AC/DC is the EQ differences... Angus and Malcolm aren’t as mid and bass heavy and that’s why the Riff Raff HB is designed how it is (lighter on bass and heavier on the treble).  The Stockholm is kind of the opposite.  I mostly want to play Sabbath and stoner/doom but hope I can dial it back to play Hells Bells or Riff Raff without having to switch guitars.

Installed the Stockholm’s today and I think they’re far more sabbath than AC/DC.  Not that I can’t play AC/DC songs on them but they’re so focused on the mids and bottom end that the open Malcolm riffs or the warmer bluesy Angus leads aren’t easy to capture on them even when dialing back the controls on the guitar or tweaking the amp eq settings.  I think the Nantucket, which I also have, can do a fairly good AC/DC (but can’t really hit the Sabbath stuff without additional stuff in the signal chain).

So... it’s my two cents

I’m playing through an Orange Brent Hinds Terror and a custom 2x12 cabinet with a Celestion alnico gold and an eminence cannabis Rex.

The Stockholm certainly has more bottom end than the Nantucket.  AC/DC doesn't have much bottom end.
