well, here's some virtual company for you, i've broken my ankle!

i wasn't overly intoxicated, but i suppose it's still technically a drinking injury, thought it was badly sprained, but the bugger's broke!  i'm in a cast for the next five weeks minimum.

it's only been a few days, but already i can feel the cabin fever!  worst of it is, i was well through my training for a half marathon, now i can't even walk.  or cook.  or get my les paul up from my music room.  amazing how one little bone stops everything.

so Dave, i feel for you, hope you're back out on the road soon.

Oh no, sorry to hear that mate. PDT_038

What did you break exactly? Mine qualifies as a "broken leg" - spiral fracture of the distal fibular - but it's really not far off the ankle at all.

Are you in a fiberglass cast or an aircast boot?

OK, questions over and here begineth the homespun wisdom:

1) Don't get too attached to the 5 week idea - It might happen and you should live with the hope at this point BUT prepare for the more realistic target of 12 weeks.

I was led to believe 6 weeks at first - my simple fracture was textbook - but the reality is that very few specialists will allow you to return to ANYTHING near normal before 12 weeks bone bridging and consolidation.

2) This is your chance to do all the things your mind is capable of without the interference of peer groups pressure and society.

3) Don't drink again till you can walk to the pub.

4) Experiment with facial hair - Grow a ZZ Top beard coz society doesn't give a shite how you look anymore!!

I've done all the above and though I feel lonely sometimes I am back up to near my intellectual best, have practiced Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar 5+ hours a day and best of all....

LOST OVER A STONE AND A HALF IN WEIGHT!!!

Plus I have trimmed my ZZ top beard into a great pirate moustache.

I've got 2/3 weeks left to go and I think that this accident was probably a blessing as my health had gone off the rails through neglect.

Good luck and post here anytime you get pissed off or frustrated and I will chip in with my 10 weeks of experience.  PDT_015

Howd you lose that weight?! Surely having a broken leg means you cant exercise as much?

Spot on my good man - you have great insight!

The booze is the key, if I don't drink 12 pints I don't need to eat junk. I feel this break was a blessing as I really, really enjoy a beer.

Thankfully I've never had a drink problem but I just love to socialise and that was taking it's toll.

I couldn't have got things back on track if I didn't get off the cycle of heading out to bars just for the sake of it.

You never expect that your guardian angel might break your leg for your own good!

This is crazy stuff. I think the BKP board is cursed   . I ALSO have injured my leg. Happened back at downlaod festival. my knee-cap slipped outta place and back again. Happens to me alot as my knee caps are pretty loose, but this time it went swollen and theres bits floating around near my knee which get jammed behind my knee cap sometimes. Horrible stuff, still hasnt gone down after over 2 weeks and still waiting to get an appointment at hospital after visiting minor injuries clinic, and my GP, who requested an #urgent# appointment (expected 2 week waiting time). Still, the NHS is free and beggars cant be choosers :P Seeing as ive yet to be hit by the tax-man, i am technically a 'beggar'.

But yea, very sorry to hear dave :( . While i havent been house-ridden i do so yearn for my old lifestyle. Used to take huge walks to my girlfriends who lives an hours walk away, but now it just aggrivastes my knee and causes me grief. I ALSO have failed to see the funny side as not even 2 years ago i had a horrible eye injury. Had a pen thrown right in my eye at great force, shattered my lens and everything and had 2 operations. At the time, you laugh, because if you dont laugh you cry. But now its just not funny any more

I feel your pain (to a certain degree). I hope you recover swiftly! know that all the boardies hearts are with you!

Petre - So that's Blue, yourself and me!

For the sake of the other BKP'ers lets hope it runs in threes.

Petre, when you had the eye incident did you get a lens implant?

I only ask because I've had both mine replaced due to cataracts (I had em at 13 years old) and the upside is that you have a more vivid perception of colour with the PMMA lens than the "natural biological" lens can offer. Super sight so to speak!

Don't ask me to varify this claim as it subjective and would involve a shitee load of philosophical epistemology (perception is totally individual after all) just look at the upside.

O PDT_015

well, it's just a little crack near the bottom of the fibula, i think the cast is mostly to make sure i don't snap it by going over on it again!  most of the pain is actually coming from the ligament damage, it's badly sprained as well.  i went over so hard that the pulling from the ligament fractured the bone, apparently.  i'm hopeful that the five weeks will be enough, it's not a major break and to be honest i'm expecting to have more trouble recovering from the sprain.  because of the cast i can't have any physio or do any strengthening exercises.

as to the facial hair experimentation, see my avatar!  the long bits at the sides of my mouth are now hanging over my chin!  i trimmed the chin hair though, for some reason mine grows sideways :?

on more free time, i've already learnt a couple of tunes i'd always meant to, and i see this as a golden opportunity to get back into my painting, which i've neglected for far too long.  every cloud does have a silver lining! (of course, every silver lining has it's cloud... and every rose has it's thorn...)

glad to hear you're seeing a good side to it all, but will you stay all healthy when it's all over? eh?  yeah, you'll have a pint or ten to celebrate the cast coming off, won't you!  well, so will i!

hey dave yea i had an artifical lens put in. When the pen broke my lens, some fluid leaked onto the surface of my eye so i kinda had a cataract form too. I had one operation to get that and the broken lens out and have it stitched up, i then had a second operation to have a false lens put in. i still have scarring though, so its still blurry  . Ive adjusted now tho! Cant say ive noticed any other differences in the eye except for that fact its cr@p. Too much scarring and i think the lens is slightly out so its a little naff. Works far better in natural light. Its a bummer you had to have them at 13. The guy who cuts my hair had the exact same thing.. cataracts on both eyes. Wonders of technology sorted that tho  :) .

Petre

p.s. i dont suppose any of you know whats wrong with my knee?   im baffled at the bits around my knee cap. sometimes they come to the surface and i can move them around  :? . so yer.... just erm... puttin it out there.. for any knee surgeons that happen to like BKP's..

Sorry to tell you Dave - it's gotten up to 4 now.....
The damn stairs in my house are really steep. (see below)
I've seen stepladders that were less steep.
Typical Victorian design - narrow and steep!

Well after nearly 4 years – they finally claimed a victim => me!
On Monday my foot slipped on the top one and I don’t remember much about what happened next (think my eyes shut)
I do know that I hit every other step on the way down though.

I think my screams scared the whole neighbourhood!
And there I lay at the bottom of the stairs for ages
Couldn’t get to a phone or anything
So I just stayed there like an upturned turtle till I was able to stabilise my condition and crawl away.
Freaking agony!
On a brighter note I don’t seem to have broken anything (absolute bloomin miracle - really glad) although I am black and blue and really ache now

Look guys this is getting ridiculous!

4 Now! How many more will it take before balance (literally) is restored to the universe?

Jon: I'm glad you're OK! Those are bloody steep and you're indeed lucky to get away without breaking your neck.

Because you're OK'ish I'm sorry to say that your accident has clarified a minor distinction: Vivid description + pictures + luck escape = slapstick. I had to stifle a giggle. Sorry..

Petre:

The clouding / scaring on the cornea could possibly be helped with LASEK (NOT LASIK) surgery. It is an evolution of past laser resurfacing and can provide amazing results. If the scar tissue is too bad though this might not be an option. DO NOT TRUST ANY CLINIC! I would only advise trusting your eyes to a consultant found through Moorfields who specialises in trauma.

To all other BKP'ers considering having a serious accident this weekend - Dont do it! - LET'S BE CAREFUL OUT THERE.....
