P90 Recommendations for a Tele
« on: June 07, 2020, 11:03:08 PM »
Hello,

I'm looking for recommendations/combo suggestions on how to place/pair P90s with single coils. Can a P90 pup be coil tapped with a push/pull pot?

The pickups are for a Custom Tele I'm building, I still haven't decided on the wood but it is probably gonna be either alder or ash with a flamed maple fretboard.

The sound I'm looking for is something versatile with more punch/ higher output than the usual Tele, without losing the "vintage" sound. Also, never had a guitar with P90s, so I'm open to being told it is a bad idea, and that I should go for lets say Piledrivers. Not trying to emulate anyone's sound but I've always liked the Wirebirds Countour of Jo and Dez from Good Tiger/The Safety Fire.

I listen mostly to prog and death metal, but I listen and play a fair share of other stuff, and already have guitars to handle those.

Proud Bareknuckle user since 2018 in here. Got a custom Strat HSS with a Cold Sweat and two Trilogy single coils, and it sounds superb. Going to dive further into them, I also have an Aristides being built right now.

Every input/advice is gonna be well received.

Sorry If this topic has already been discussed, I just couldn't find anything on search.

You can coiltap a P90 to reduce the outputvalue.

If you're looking for a vintage tele-sound with balls, I would definitely look at the BKP Flat 50's.

Yet, P90's do very well in tele's too. A Nantucket or Supermassive can cover a lot of styles.

Thank you very much,

Looking already at the BKP Flat 50s, gonna look into he Supermassive and Nantucket aswell.

Would you recommend having a P90 on the bridge and a single coil in the neck? I've never seen that kind of setup. is it too crazy?

I wonder if i should just go with a HB in the bridge and a single in the neck.

It is usually done the other way around: tele-single coil at the bridge, P90 in the neckposition. I guess because a bridge P90 will overpower nearly any tele-neck single coil.

Yeah I wouldn't match a Tele neck with anything other than a pretty calm single coil in the bridge, definitely not a P-90 in the bridge with a Tele neck

Thanks, after careful consideration I ended up getting the highest output Tele Coil Boot Camp in the neck and a Painkiller HB, to try it out. I think it adapts better to my style of playing. I'm looking forward to hear your thoughts about this.

I guess the P90 in the neck balances out with the single coil bridge output, so It makes sense.

Is it a matter of preference? or just the dynamics of the combination that doesn't make sense to you? I'm curious.

I may go in the future for a Tele bridge coil to pair it with the brute force single on the neck, or just swap the whole set for something more vintage sounding.

I just think that the Tele necks would tend to be overpowered by a P-90 bridge

Personally I think a Supermassive neck would work nicely with a Piledriver bridge.

I have a Piledriver bridge paired with a Nantucket neck and that balances fine.
