To the point first: I have a constant problem with my 6th string buzzing on the first fret of I pick too hard (unless the string tension is high, like my 10.5-52 gauge strings tuned no lower than E flat, and even then I can't be very aggressive). I don't go crazy (no Pete Townsend impersonating), I even started using thin picks (0.6mm) and retrained my right hand to pick lighter and more deliberately.
I visually checked the nut slot height by pressing on the third fret of each string to make sure there's a bit of space between each string and the top of the first fret. The neck has just a shade of relief in it (pressing down the sixth string at the first and last frets I can see a thin gap between the string and the middle frets).
Am I just too ham-handed? Should I put a bit more relief in the neck? Should I consider having a new nut cut? Any/all advice is greatly appreciated.
