would it be possible....
« on: July 19, 2006, 01:35:01 PM »
hi,

just been thinking about how to get a true single coil tone out of a humbucker fitted guitar without re-routing anything....

would it be possible to mount two singlecoils next to each other and have them 'buck' - but still change to singlecoils when i flick a switch?????

Cheers

It is possible but as far as I understand it will change the sound of the single coils (in sc mode) as one sc will sense the magnet of the other sc being so close. This is not necessarily bad , just different and maybe a little unpredictable.
Please, anyone correct me if that is not the case :)

You could always get a Missisipi Queen which is basically a single coil in a Humbucker cover.

feedback??
hmm ?? I don't think so...
...after all a humbucker has two magnets close to each other and that's no problem.

Or have a look at the Steve Morse guitar:

He doesn't seem to have a problem...

i thought a HB had one big magnet at the bottom, which is why it sounded different to SCs when split???

i take it you are referring to the 2 middle pups??? if so then they are about an inch apart, whereas i was thinking of 2 singles in a HB slot....

just a thought :P

i think Tim has done a pickup like this, the Knuckleduster, which i believe is exclusively for Nathan Sheppard guitars.  also Swineshead do a humbucker which is two actual single coil pickups together, although i've no idea what it sounds like.

maybe Tim would do something like this, i'd be interested.

the back sc is really close to the HB, that's what I was refereing to. More or less as close as your two sc would be.
I don't know if the effect is the same, though.

you could always do the Vai approach...

put a SC in there and a dummy coil next to it.

he does that with his sustainer equipped guitars
