I finally got to try some BKP's... and HBE Pedals, Ben!
« on: July 25, 2006, 01:33:34 PM »
hey guys! (if this is the wrong forum, feel free to move it, Ol, I wasn't sure which to put it in, since there's bits about pickups and bits about fx!)

Anyway, as some of you may know, I was in London recently. So of course, I went on a marathon testing out session (over about 5 days)! EDIT: see my post below for the list of all I tried! If you want any info on anything I tried, my personal feelings about them, then post in here!

I'm not going to list even a fraction of what I tried, as it'd fill about 15 pages, but I will tell about the two things that people in this forum talk about a lot- BKP's and HBE (for Ben/TO!).

Anyway, the BKP. Andy's music shop in Denmark street had a Charlie Chandler strat with a single pickup strat, marked as having a
 "bareknuckle pickup!"

I have to try that, I think. Anyway, I ask to try it. Needless to say, when I ask, the sales guy doesn't know what pickup it is. Grrr, foiled!

Anyway, he plugs me into a fender bassman amp. I haven't tried this amp before. Foiled again (I didn't see anything I was familiar with, amp-wise)!

As you can tell, this isn't going too well...

So I start to play. Cleans are a little dark, I think it's alnico V (seems a bit too modern sounding for alnico II, too warm for ceramic- of course, this could be cr@p, lol), so I'm guessing it's one of the higher gain pickups. Definitely very good cleans if it is one of the higher gain pickups. Very responsive to touch too.

Then he plugs me into an older line 6 amp, to try the distortion. To be honest, I couldn't tell very much, because I'm not used to the amp, and I was plugged into a very bass-heavy, modern sounding model (recto?). It did sound a lot better than a Duncan I tried to compare it too, but then I expected that. I wasn't impressed with Duncans even before I'd tried BK's.

So I'm thinking it was a nailbomb, or holy diver, something like that. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. So yeah, I was pretty impressed, just it was unfortunate that I didn't get to try it in the best of circumstances. (according to charlie chandler's website, their guitars have fralin pickups, maybe someone got a BKP specially put in it? Oh, and I just realised I was looking at the CC guitar experience website, not the one at kew, before I went to London. And I decided not to go. The one in Kew has Mojave etc. cr@p. :( Ah well, I just have to go back some other time...)

On to the pedals. I tried the HBE big D, the power screamer (with fat boost mod) and the uno mos. I tried them head to head with some other od's.

The big D is awesome. So many options, etc. And sounded really good too- you could almost get an overdrive out of it, though it didn't quite match up to the standalone OD's I was trying it against. Now, to be fair I haven't really tried very many distortion pedals, but I thought this one ruled. Thumbs up.

Power screamer: really very good, but not just as jaw-droppingly so, in my opinion. It ruled because of the options, but there were other pedals that sounded as good for cheaper (blackbox x-ray, though it has nowhere near the options) or a bit better for a lot more cash (klon centaur).

So yeah, really very very good, but not amazing, perhaps. It's the one to buy if you want loads of options. I also thought the fat boost mod was worth the extra cash, if that's of use to anyone.

Uno mos: excellent. Does what it says on the tin- a transparent clean boost, which sounds awesome.

There you go, just thought I'd share...

Nice review!

I think it would be cool to have a list, at least, of what you tried out or compared. Then we can grille you for specifics!

Thanks!

ah cr@p, lol. I have to go for lunch now, but I'll make a list of everything I tried to the best of my knowledge. And put them in order, based on what I compared to what (since that's what really matters- heck, if I tried an MG on its own, I'd probably like it. Maybe not, but you know what I mean).

I'll get on it later.

What was the H&K Switchblade like? That was on my list of maybe's before I got my Screamer, but I never got the chance to try one - the screamer was a must buy for the price at LGS (thanks Tim  )

And what was the Ibanez SZ like - I was considering one of those as my next guitar (could be years away yet :P )

Oh and also, Wlecome back Dave - you seem to have not been around for a while :drink:

EDIT: See my Bareknuckles <---- I finally got them :D

It will be replaced when I can raise the money (along with the 2-4 new gutars I want, which will then also need BKs), but sadly at the moment Holiday takes precedent over Holydiver :( especially the callibrated zebra Holydiver set I want for that guitar

the switchblade was alright, but not great. I dunno about H&K- they have a very unique voicing. Sounded a little sterile to me (the switchblade). Didn't help that I tried it next to the triamp though....

have you thought of checking out a genz benz el-diablo? I was very impressed with it...

the sz was good. But then I tried an SZ a while ago, and it didn't feel so good.

It's a korean ibanez. Don't buy one unless you get the chance to play the one you're going to buy, as those korean ibby's havce some pretty dodgy quality control...

What are the BK's like?

Not got them in yet - Waiting on the new pickguard so that they'll actually fit in the guitar...

However, they look very pretty and are nice and weighty.

Je suis regarder une emission sur les personnes anglais qui voyage a France et dois parler le langue tout les temps et ils trouvent ca tres dificile...C'est tres drole parce que ils ne parle pas le bon francais.

I know that was very off topic, but I was bored and wanted to talk french :P

I would try the el diablo if I lived nearer a decent guitar shop, or had the means to travel to one...I'm happy enough with the Screamer for now, especially for what I paid for it - May be getting it revalved soon as well :)

A Screamer takes some beating, maybe an SE or Invader would do it :)

3 more guitars in Texas to come over here = 3 more sets of BKP's (no more 'pigs though lol), OOH Engl+BKP=, however Engl+BKP+HBE Screamer =AGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH

I think I agree with you there sir - the Screamer does take some beating, but an SE or Invader would likely do the job...If I ever had the cash, I'd probably have to buy one of those and use my screamer as a cab - as I'd never find the money for a cab as well

aye, the screamer's nice. I mean, you can get better amps, but they're quite a lot more cash (or else have very few features, maybe a lower wattage, for the same cash).

The genz benz el-diablo would be the main contender, I'd say, and the mesa f30 would be another choice (the ED is better though, in my opinion).

both are about £200 more, though.

I played an F-30 at LGS before buying the screamer during my period of deliberation, and decided that it had a great warm clean tone (different to Engl - more jazzy) but it was fairly shite at everything else in comparison to the Screamer...but I guess that's just my opinion :P
