The Band- sublime stuff-I have the DVD of the Last Waltz- never get tired of it and their music is full of soul.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance
BKP's: Apache, Country Boy, Slowhands.

Yeah, I have the last waltz too. Some seriously good stuff, and robbie robertson has to be one of the most criminally underrated guitarists of all time. Awesome band.

On a side note, have either of you ever tried explaining the fact that they're called "the band" to someone who's really drunk?

Yes, it can be made even trickier by being in a similar state of intoxication!

I don't rate robbie robertson all that highly, myself. Levon Helm is one of the greatest drummers of all time tho.

I just bought an album by Terra Naomi, a chick with an acoustic guitar.  All you metalheads would hate it.  :P

I like chicks with acoustic guitars.  Heck, I like chicks! :) (But I'm a respectable married man these days, so I'm really only allowed to like one chick ;)).

Much though I love the glories of metal, I'll go on record as saying that the live performance of Norah Jones (OK, she's got a piano, but it's still acoustic) of "Nightingale" at Bonnaroo 2002 is really good, and in any case far better than her studio stuff.  There, I've said it; y'all can shout "death to false metal" at me now. ;)

So, anyway .... Best record I've bought this year?  Um, this only reminds me of how few records I've bought!  But, probably, it was Denial of Death by The Brain Surgeons NYC (with Al Bouchard, ex-BOC, and Ross the Boss, ex-Manowar & ex-Dictators).  Fab heavy rock/metal with intelligent and tuneful playing.  If you're around NYC, look out for gigs from them -- well worth it.

If I can count albums from the last 12 months (inc. autumn 2005), then I can add the Iommi/Hughes Fused album and Bruce Dickinson's Tyranny of Souls (though I still like Bruce's Chemical Wedding better. I just got the Phish Live in Brooklyn DVD, and it's quite good, but I haven't finished listening to it yet, and my comparative memories are still coloured by too many awesome small-venue shows from the early '90s to be too objective. And I expect the new Gov't Mule album out 22 August to be very good -- but who knows? :)

Ah -- and in an effort to keep destroying my metal credentials, I'll give a nod to Shakira's Oral Fixation Vol. 2, which isn't as cohesive as older albums like ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? or Pies Descalzos, but for pop music ain't bad and is, also, stylistically fairly mental, which the pop world needs more of :)

The best band I've seen this year (except Motorhead, who are too so legendary and excellent that I need to handicap them out of the running) was these folks http://www.myspace.com/heidisband in a bitsy little pub gig.  They put on a seriously good show!  (Though their guitarists need to buy some BKPs. :))

A HMV working buddy of mine has "borrowed" a copy of Christ Illusion.

It's $%&#ing immense. Best album since Seasons In the Abyss. Hannemann is on fire.

I bought some oldies on Itunes....

La Grange - ZZ Top up to now.

I agree with all those who mentioned "The Band", I love Robbie Robertson's solo on "King Harvest (has surely come)".

Just downloading Rage Against the Machine's eponymus album, so that might end up my fave.....

Havent bought an album from him so far, but I've downloaded a few of Izzy Stradlins solo project stuff after GnR and I really like it, different from GnR but thats a good thing, as Slash's Snakepit just sounds like GnR with a different singer (imho) so doesnt really say much for his versatility :)

Is that his stuff with the Ju Ju Hounds? I've got a copy of their first album lying around somewhere. Is kinda bluesy iirc?

Snakepit were pretty good but I just couldn't get all that into them, the same goes for Velvet Revolver really. Although they're good, they really didn't live up to my expectations given the member's earlier bands.  :(

I dont like the Ju Ju Hounds stuff that much, I think the ones I got are from Izzy's 117 degrees album, I've been looking for somewhere to buy it but cant seem to find it anywhere, and can only find the album called River on ebay :( It is kinda bluesy yeah, I like the style a lot.

:D I`ve deliberatly held off from replying to this thred for a while  to see what  kinda "new stuff" people were buying. I personnaly think this year has been very mediocre for new releases. I`ve bought quite a few albums this year but non of them are current releases:

War & Peace = The Walls Have Eyes
Savatage = Edge Of Thorns
Dream Evil = The Book Of Heavy Metal
Streets Of Desire = V
Meatloaf = Bat Out Of Hell, Deadringer
Newman = Sign Of The Modern Times, Heaven Knows
Rhino Bucket = Rhino Bucket
Ronnie  Stolt = Wall street Voodoo

To name but a few.
God I could do with a Gin & Tonic !

:D It is fair to say that these guys are beyond doubt the most cheesy Metal act around !

Into The Moonlight  is a great tune but i rolled round the floor laughing my arse off when i heard the big boomy Manowar style backing vocals singing "Man Or Mouse" !!!
