this is just a vote really to kind of gather your views on fuzz and fuzz pedals only. It's open to dicussion. What fuzz pedals do you currently use and why?

I'm posting this after getting the Keely Fuzz head which is my favourite fuzz pedal.

Gimme your opinions.

I like listening to it, it sounds pretty good when Page uses it at least.. but when I play with it, I get bored of the sound after about 10 minutes. Then again I havent played with a "proper" fuzz, only my Rat, which doesnt get really fuzzy I guess..

The great thing about fuzz is that there are SO many different pedals out there with distictive tones... Fuzz Face, Big Muff, Tone Bender, Supafuzz, Shin Ei Duo Fuzz.

When you look deeper there are variants on the circuits over the years too - Germanium-transistor Fuzz face or Silicon-transistor Fuzz Face. They both sound great, but not alike.

I have a Big Muff and I hate it :D Though its realy not to suitable for the kind of music that i play. However I have heard alot about fuzz pedals being used to get that 'stoner/doom' sound. What kind of fuzz might be good for that?

Cheers, Pentagram f'in rule!!! For a stoner/doom tone you (ideally) want less overall fuzz than a stock Big Muff will give you. I've modded Big Muffs so that they have more mids - this really opens them up for a ballsy tone.

The best (stock) Doomy fuzz pedal is the Russian Green Big Muff (imo) set with the volume on full and just enough gain to make things cook.

^ Is the russian version any differnt circuit-wise from the NY USA version? Yeh Pentagram do F'in rule m8 though im more into the 'Victor Griffen-era', especialy there first LP. Love every song on that disc.

I never really liked fuzz boxes until I tried them with single coils.

Currently using a Frantone 'sweet' and a fuzz factory- both having their own unique tones, but like any effect ita all about finding their sweet spots.

Mothers Milks, Frantone, Chorus, Delay and you can't stop sounding like Steve Hillage- which is nice....

The EH pedals have wandering specs, both circuit wise and componands.

In the case of the early russian ones I thing they chucked in whatever transistor they had around. Many people use the russian one in preference to the US but they did shop around for a good sounding one in the first place (same as hendrix did for the original fuzz faces).

Look around here for a fuzz sound that you like.

I use a Fuzz Factory i find it to noisy on the standard setting, problem being i got a laney gh50l basicly a one channel amp and i like the gain turned up. The Fuzz Factory needs to go into a clean amp. I like sum of the crazier sound i can get tho.

Big Muff. Seriously. Particularly the Russian due to it's increased bottom end.

That said, just about any fuzz pedal will work. Electric Wizard uses a Boss FZ-2 (extremely scooped), Fu Manchu was using a Fuzz Face (extremely not scooped), Kyuss/QOTSA changes all the time and trys to keep what he's using a secret (run through a bass cab so the top end is bled off) and Boris uses just about anything through a cranked Orange head, though I've been seeing alot of Muff alot on her pedalboard lately (Russian, Triangle, and NYC).

Myself, I use a Muff. Honestly I don't like a Muff into a clean amp....it's not that interesting sounding IMO. But if you run it into a clean amp that's being pushed for huge overdrive it sounds awesome. Mine's run into an Orange that's permanantly on 10.

The muff is a great starting point for fuzz, plus theyre cheap so you can mod the hell out of them without worrying too much (and theres a lot of mods out there)

My home built uses lower gain transistors than stock and run into a little overdriven fender (pretty good through marshalls too) it's the business.

Also certain guitars seem to suit certain guitars, as my the muff I use sounded best with a Tokai firebird and a friends Epi casino. It's also brilliant with my strat (and it does obcene things with the 12 string (obcene in a good way)). But just didn't seem to get along with the Peavey I have (a set of mules should fix that).

Whereas the Danelectro French toast, suits the Wolfgang much better (to my ears.) Perhaps Muffs suit single coil pickups better.

So try them all with a guitar similar to the one you normally use.

Muff for DOOM?! I always found mine responded very poorly to palm muting and pinch squeals (I kno those arent common techniques for doom metal, but im more into traditional, early Pentagram type stuff). Im actualy considering selling mine because I havent used it for months but for a while I was considering having it modded.
