Author Topic: Delay Pedal and Effects Loop (Read 5360 times)

Hey guys,

just got a Line6 DL4 Delay pedal, and not sure if im satisfied. im running it before my combo marshall, and it sounds like the delay aren't kicking in until after i stop playing, or if it does, sounds harsh and not smooth like the built in delay of the combo. just doesnt sound that great. i tried to put it in the effects loop in hopes it sounded smoother, but instead it decreased the volume of my rig. Is it just this pedal, or am I missing something? ive heard only rave reviews of this pedal so im a little confused anyone have suggestions on other multi-preset delay pedals?

You should use it up front, not in the loop. That's where I use my delay pedal anyway. Sounds like you need to tweak the settings to suit what you want. Try shortening the delay time?

I'm interested in this topic as well. I have a Rivera Fandango combo, with an effects loop with adjustable levels for send / return, so it's very versatile. I found my Boss DD3 sounded much cleaner thru the loop rather than in front, and no problems with levels. I haven't tweaked the levels very much, basically around 6 on both dials.

Most things I've read suggest that time-based EFX are better in the effects loop than up front, but there still seem to be varying opinions - depends on which amp, perhaps?

I always use my delay pedal in he effects loop of my amp for many reasons- stronger signal, no horrible garbled delay when using over drive,
and i find it easier to control the overall delay level. Oh, and it sounds better to these ears.

The later in the chain the delay is, the better. Some people build slave rigs just to put it between the amp and cab.

I found exactly the same problem with the Line6 units if its any consolation.

Likewise, i have a DL4 too, and in the effects loop of my triple rectifier it causes quite a significant drop in volume.

As a general add on to all this, i have found very few fx which don't alter the base tone in some way although i accept one can get anal about it too. I have had a few quality amps in my time (Cornford MK50 and Hellcat, THD Flexi) and when you like the amp sound its a real pain. I wish i could afford Mr Pete Cornish's services. It seems the only real way of maintaining good amp tone! :?

I hear Robert Keeley does mods on DL4's to get over this issue - could be wrong though

Apparently there are some amps which simply dislike delay pedals, I remember Zachary Vez mentioned not using a delay with the Nano amp as it causes issues.

thanks for the many reply, very helpful. I wrote an email to Keeley about the mod they offer; seems like it could solve the problem. Does anyone know of any other multi-preset delay pedals??

http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/PRODUCTS/EN/DD-20/ is one off the top of my head. A lot of people use more than one pedal of the Boss DD3/6 Series too
