Bogner Uberschall...
« on: September 22, 2006, 04:53:23 PM »
I tried a Bogner Uberschall today... this thing has serious face-melting amounts of gain and is surprisingly versatile when you peel the gain back.

The clean channel has lots of headroom - apparently it was designed to stay very clean and it does that job really well.

At an asking price of £1899 (£1999RRP) I'll not be rushing out to buy one, but it is a serious amp - up there with the VH4, though not as flexible.

OK, I know it's not the same but I just upgraded my Line6 with model packs and have been playing the Uberschall and Cornford sims most of the day, if this is a taste of what the real thing is like then you are one lucky man!

From that brief description it sounds a lot like an early '70s Traynor YGL-3; about £150 if you can find one.

I've had a Traynor amp before, it was 95% identical to a tweed Bassman circuit, nothing like the Uberschall.  The Uber's clean channel was most like a Fender Twin, but funkier.

The overdrive channel was just insane - I was playing Pantera riffs with the gain on 5.  Full gain is probably 'too' much, it sounded better with the gain set to around 3/4 of max (8'ish)

I have a 73 Traynor Mark 3. I love it, I wish my father let me play it more and let me get some new tubes :( (It's running on stock tubes - LOL).

So whats better; a Diezel VH4 or the Uberschall? For playing metal that is.

LMAO

When I tried the VH4, the guy who imports them into this country (BlackMachine) reckoned that the Herbert was better for modern metal than the VH4.

I must admit that the VH4 was one hell of an amp, it can go from clean to insane gain much like the Uberschall BUT I'd say the VH4 is more versatile because of the footswitchable 4-channels and midi-programming.

OTOH, the VH4 will set you back around £2400 whereas the Uberschall is a 'measley' £1899.

For my needs I don't NEED four channels - technique and the volume knob are used to create various tones.  You can always adjust the gain level between songs too, it's allowed (heh).

If I had to choose, I'd go for the Uberschall.  If I sell my '67 SG jr I may well get myself an Uber, they're THAT good even at shop levels.

I've never played an Ubershcall before, but I have played the XTC, and I'm very familiar with the VH-4, as I play it every week.

If you know the VH-4, how would you compare the amp's tightness to the Diezel? Does it have as modern a sound as the Diezel?

I wish theyd make a one channel uberschall. I just dont feel like a clean channel belongs in a true metal amp. Thats what ur colume knobs for :]. Just my opinion of course.

I take it you want to know how the VH4 compares to the Uberschall? - I would say the VH4 is tighter and more focused in the bass end, but not by much (that's not to say the Uber isn't focused either)

The VH4 reminds me of Metallica's Justice rhythm tone whereas the Uberschall is more modern and reminds me of the tone Dime got on the last Pantera album.

Having been set on a VH4 after trying all sorts of amps, the Uber is now Number One on my list.  Should sound mental in tandem with my Randall Titan (that amp has SICK bass end, just LOUD LOUD LOUD!!!)
