In the continuing Tom Waits saga - I've just ordered Closing Time.
Me and Mr's TM went to see Pete Molinari at The Donkey in Leicester the other week and he played "Hope that I don't fall in love with you". Mr's TM loved it so I'm getting her the album. Strange really because my Tom Waits listening usually has to be in my car or when she's out. I'll convert her one day.
Great stuff :D - and of course the nexus from which all else flowed.
If your good Lady liked the track you mentioned, another couple of gems in the same vein are " Martha" ( about an old man who eventually finds the long distance phone number of his first love ) - and "Grapefruit Moon" a generally sentimental feast , and many more .
There is of course "Ol 55" which the Eagles respectfully 'nicked' off him. Being his first album ( and therefore being over 35 years old ) his voice is clearer - and the whole format is great for converting your wife ; as it is voice / piano / strings e.t.c. and long before he got 'experimental'. I am sure this will be one that you will both enjoy sharing over a drink and a cuddle.
I think it is not until folks hear 'Closing Time' that the miracle of how the genius that is Tom Waits 'snake charmed' us through all the transitions to albums like 'Real Gone' and 'Mule Variations' , becomes apparent. I still love how ( even in the midst of one of his many 'diverse' or downright challenging later day albums ) Tom can still pull out an emotive gem that could have been included on 'Closing Time' .
Enjoy ! :D
