Tom Waits again - Real Gone (this time)

Brilliant !  :D

My faves probably being 'Circus', 'Metropolitan Glide' and 'Make it rain' - although as with many of the later Waits albums, it benefits from being listened to as a complete work / experience .  Nice to see the talented and unique guitarist Marc Ribot being employed again on some tracks as well, as I thought his contribution (s) on the album "Raindogs" on tracks like 'Jockey full of bourbon' really helped to make that album the classic it became. Tom Waits seems to have the knack of knowing just who to bring in - and when to use them.

I am pleased to hear that you were not afraid to go for the 'hard core' stuff...  8)

Yeah man.  I was listening to Used Songs the other day and I'd say that's a good place to start with him.  Some excellent stuff, some odd stuff and some very odd stuff.  That's him all over  :D

I am glad to hear that you checked out his early stuff - on what is a very good / representative compilation album - as behind the eccentricity - he is a lovely ballad writer.

On the otherwise 'angular' later period 'Bone Machine'  album, there are a couple of  songs called " Whistle Down The Wind"  and " A little Rain " that are just beautiful.   On 'You Tube' there is also a little known gem from the recent triple album of 'out takes'  that is called ' Orphans'  the song is entitled " You Can Never Hold Back Spring" - the later being something that a singer / guitarist a mate of mine went straight home and just felt he had to work into his repetoire. The 'You Tube' video has a great photo montage against the Album track backdrop:

So I am currently listening to this :

And for all you 'Rock Gods' out there ....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgeZEdbv_m8

That's a good song, I liked that  :D

Right now, this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyJa2j95LzM

"Twilight of the Innocents" by Ash, the title track to what might be their last album (apparently they said they will not be making albums anymore).  I went to see them play "1977" in it's entirety last September at the Astoria in London.  They then did a second set consisting of "Greatest Hits" from the rest of their back catalogue, and closed with this.  Considering much of their stuff is poppy punk, this was surprising when I first heard it, but has become one of my favourite songs of theirs.

On a side note, Tim Wheeler's guitar in that Video is rather lovely - a Gibson KS-336, I believe.  Me want.
Proud owner of a set of Riff Raffs and Emeralds.

Just as a quick correction of my last post, the second video ( an eloquent demonstration of stage craft for all you would be 'Rock Gods'  out there ) - should have been this one :

So tonight I am listening to that understated gem .   :)

In the continuing Tom Waits saga - I've just ordered Closing Time.

Me and Mr's TM went to see Pete Molinari at The Donkey in Leicester the other week and he played "Hope that I don't fall in love with you".  Mr's TM loved it so I'm getting her the album.  Strange really because my Tom Waits listening usually has to be in my car or when she's out.  I'll convert her one day.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Great stuff   :D  - and of course the nexus from which all else flowed.

If your good Lady liked the track you mentioned, another couple of gems in the same vein are " Martha" ( about an old man who eventually finds the long distance phone number of his first love ) - and "Grapefruit Moon" a generally sentimental feast , and many more .

There is of course "Ol 55"  which the Eagles respectfully 'nicked' off him.  Being his first album  ( and therefore being over 35 years old ) his voice is clearer - and the whole format is great for converting your wife ;  as it is voice / piano / strings e.t.c. and long before he got 'experimental'.   I am sure this will be one that you will both enjoy sharing over a drink and a cuddle.

I think it is not until folks hear 'Closing Time' that the miracle of how the genius that is Tom Waits 'snake charmed' us  through all the transitions to albums like 'Real Gone' and 'Mule Variations' , becomes apparent.  I still love how ( even in the midst of one of his many 'diverse' or downright challenging later day albums )   Tom can still pull out an emotive gem that could have been included on 'Closing Time' .

Enjoy !  :D
