Exile on Main Street - Rolling Stones, the 'new' version with some 'never heard before ever' tracks. Apart from a few tracks I think it's a bit run of the mill.

Interesting... Do you mean the new version is a bit run of the mill, or the album itself?

I bought it years ago ("it's brilliant, it's the one..." everyone said ) ... and I felt very much it was "run of the mill"... and a bit rambling, and, er, basically, as a complete album, "@rse"...

BUT... over the years it's kinda grown on me. It's possibly my favourite (non-best-of) Stones album. I replaced my vinyl with CD a while back, and recently I've been quite looking forward to this thing...

I meant the album itself. Sounds like I felt the same way as you - loads of people saying "best rock 'n' roll album ever" or it getting 10 out of 10 in many reviews. Maybe it'll be a slow grower. I'll keep plugging away! I'm not easily broken though - it took me a while to get into Toys in the Attic and now I love it  :?
I think I hate being indecisive.

The Stones are very much a "guitar band", and I've read so many interviews and features about them over the years, I've always felt that they're a band you're "supposed" to like, respect, even revere.

But I've slowly come to realise I don't like them, I don't get them and I never will.  It doesn't bother me anymore.

(Whilst I'm being sacrilegious, I feel the same way about the Beatles and the Who as well, to some extent, but I like them a lot better than the Stones)

I think Townshend's a truly great songwriter, and I love some of the Who stuff e.g. most of Who's Next.  But there are other things I just can't get into at all, e.g. Tommy (although I love the film!  ).

Janis Joplin: Pearl

love this album.  thing i hate about re-issues is the extra tracks tacked on at the end.  they kind of ruin the listening experience!  especially if they're not very good.  do extra tracks, by all means, but put them on a second disc please

Totally agree!  You're enjoying a much-loved album which was put together, many years ago, with careful consideration for the running order.... the last notes of that atmospheric final track are just fading away....

....then BANG!  You're listening to some ropey demo, 7" edit or comedy B-side.  :x

Nothing wrong with extra tracks as such, but they're never anything more than interesting curios.  When I copy albums to iTunes (which isn't very often) I usually exclude the bonus tracks.

Yep, I'm with you on the extra tracks thing. Originally we were being talked into getting the re-issue cos it's got extra tracks... but now... what a pain they are (when on the same disc as the original).

However, I'm still getting talked into getting a re-issue cos it's remastered... YUM!!!

But... I am beginning to suspect that, in many instances, the big knob marked "Volume" on the front of my stereo, when applied to the older CD, actually has the same sort of effect... sigh...

EDIT: Oh yeah, what have I been listening to...

Well it started off with Made In Japan (that has the extras on a second disc! Good boys...)(But they made the artwork black instead of gold... fools).

And it progressed from there to the "Live in Japan" 3 CD thing that has almost all of the three gigs - most interesting, I bought it out of curiosity some time ago, and never got round to studying the subtle nuances...

But I actually ended up in this Purple fest by having a few RJD nights myself - the first three Rainbow albums were on rotation for several nights. The missus had trouble sleeping to them though

(Why she can sleep to Made In Japan but not Rainbow Rising, I'll never figure out...)

Yeah, I am no expert on the technicalities but it seems most remastered CDs are LOUDER and quite possibly not much else.  They may even be pushed to the point where you're getting some digital clipping/distortion (or something...  :? )

Having said that, some really old CDs are so quiet that they sound weak and muffled, like the sound is coming from under a pillow, and even the Volume knob won't cure it.  Early CD editions of Wishbone Ash's New England and Front Page News spring to mind!

I have had "Exile" on CD for many years and I like it but wouldn't rave about it. I think that the "new" tracks were probably left off the original for a good reason though I haven't yet heard them so I may be talking cobblers-it certainly wouldn't be the first time. To me, "Exile" is worth having for 2 reasons 1) Tumbling Dice and 2) Sweet Virginia.

an album (and band) I've loved since I first heard them at the age of 14

the level of musicianship on this record is astonishing - even if today's listeners would find it a little bit unlistenable, self-indulgent and inaccessible at times

I don't care, I love it

Wow !

My very first ( and much loved / played ) 'grown up'  Album purchase. The coolest thing anybody could have in their record collection round these parts at the time ;  giving  rise to much guitar worship - and Purple bedroom colour schemes* .

( * This was the early 1970 after all ! ) .

Great stuff, thanks for the memory Frank !  8)
