I bought "Archives" and "All the World's a Stage" in 82 or so, just to show willing, but found them boring and very wearing on the ears. Then they went synthy and I loathed them even more

By coincidence, those two were among my earliest Rush purchases, in between the releases of Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.  But I loved them!

well, my girlfriend was very cool, and got me a small stack of Rory Gallagher CDs as a surprised birthday present  :D so I've been working my way through those.

i like his melodic/less bluesy stuff the best. though some of those blues tracks are real toe tappers!

Rory's best stuff always reminds me of my favourite ale. Goes down a real treat.

Yep, I was working at home the other day and listened to Rory all day.

Meanwhile, my new Rush albums have arrived. I haven't had a chance to listen to the new one in much depth yet - my impression was that I loved it by the end. He's singing a LOT lower again, although I think it might be showing more because he doesn't seem to have plastered his leads with high harmonies this time. (Bear in mind that this is based on only one listen at a Mrs R imposed volume...)

I did notice that they seem to be recycling a lot of melodies on this one, there were several times I looked thinking "hang on, they've done that before". Never noticed that on previous albums.

The missing ones I picked up were Presto, Roll the Bones (or whatever it's called), and "the blue one with rocks on it" (these guys are utterly useless at memorable titles, especially song-titles )

Now, I do have Presto on vinyl somewhere, but I only listened to it once or twice when I bought it. Listened to it on the way in to work today - I LOVE this album.

It's a concept album, so there's some sort of theme running through it and frequent references to "the Watchmaker(s)".  I haven't made any attempt to understand it!

I did wonder that (looking at the pretty pictures).

But that's not quite the kind of re-cycling I meant . It was more of a "hang on, they've done this (melody or chord progression) before on a previous album" - which kind of surprised me. Initial surprise was that they seemed to be doing it, and then the bigger surprise came when I realised that they've managed to avoid doing it (or have hidden it extremely well) in the past...

I'm probably going to set it running on the home journey tonight. I wouldn't be able to tell you where things were recycled from though - because I can't put any titles with any of the songs! (Apart from the really obvious ones).

And, to all "special" Rush fans - if I can't hear this alleged "recycling" second time round, I shall come back and retract the blasphemic statement in this post!

I'm really going nuts over a Japanese band called Zazen Boys these days. Bloody great stuff, if a bit weird.

Ah, I didn't realise that's what you were getting at.  You're probably right, much as I love Rush I do feel that their songs have been getting a bit "samey" on the more recent albums.  I thought that was just them getting deeper entrenched in their "signature sound", but maybe they actually are repeating bits!

Problem is, I know every note of the '70s/'80s albums, but I listen to music in a much more cursory fashion nowadays, I couldn't tell you song titles even.  When I was in my teens/twenties I got into things much more intensely, I assume most people do the same but maybe it's just me.

what would be a good introduction. I know some stuff but can't be bothered googling to find a recommendation for a record. That's a boring way of being introduced to music anyway.

I am going through a real bad patch at the moment - listening to Sisters of Mercy, The Cult, early Billy Idol - I even dusted off a chorus pedal and  started playing White Wedding and She Sells Sanctuary (both are pretty cool actually).  I guess its the recession  :?

Think I'll overload the forums if I listed em all, but here's a taste.
Guns 'n Roses
Slash ("Solo" projects)
ZZ Top
Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Judas Priest
Megadeth
Hendrix
Sabbath
Motörhead
ACDC
Airbourne
Simon & Garfunkel
BB King
Blues Brothers

Yes, I mash everything together to create awesomeness. Playlist has pretty much stayed the same for years, just with more stuff added. Above listed are all represented with 4 or more songs each. 'tis a big playlist.
Digital age and all, so I don't fumble about with records anymore.
That playlist does indeed play all day, everyday. Just incase you were wondering.

Anyways, what I am listening to this exact moment is the soundtrack to the first Death Star destruction in Star Wars (watching the movie right now for the billionth time.) Guess it doesn't count, but there you have it regardless. =)
