ok so seriously considering getting a schecter for my Metal non-trem axe....

still considering ones other people have suggested... i.e... Ibanez SZ320, Dean Vendetta e.t.c...

but now looking into Schecters a bit..

mainly the C1-Elite and S1-Elite...

whats peoples views on: schecter in general, those two particular models.... any other models that you would pick over them?

any info much appreciated,

I got some sort of S-1 (Schecter Twin Tribal, double neck based on the S-1 Devil & Scorpion I think), all mahogany, with good pickups it rocks! Very metal :twisted:

I don't like 'em. I prefer the Ibanez SZ- though I'm not too fussed on that either.

Have you tried any Lags? www.lagguitars.co.uk

some of them are pretty good guitars for the money, IMO. just be sure to check them- some of the ones sent for review in the magazines were poorly set up.

I don't lilke Lag, they are really over priced for what you get. The made in France models are great but same things, really over priced...
Never liked the SZ, looks cool but the neck is horrible. A matter of taste I think...

^ ^ i meant the chinese ones around the price of an ibanez sz- the french ones are presumably way out of sambo's price range if he's looking at sz's... added to the fact that I haven't tried any of the french ones.

I guess me not liking schecters is a bit of a backlash to the total fanboying that they're subject to on another popular guitar forum (hint: the letters G and U form the initials, but not necessarily in that order).

I don't like the nut width, it's too narrow, but I fully accept/admit that that's personal preference.

But the fingerboards on any I've tried were really dry etc. They just didn't plain feel that good, to be honest. It also doesn't help that sound control are the sole distributors, because:

(a) look how dear the stuff is that sound control stocks that there IS competition with other shops with and

(b) I've heard a rumour (that sounds entirely plausible) that Guitar Center in the USA (big chain, bit like their version of sound control) is the worldwide distributor- i.e. they get to pick the schecters they like, and sound control get the ones that they don't take.

Now (b) could be total BS, but the couple I've tried were far from amazing.

I also think you should look into some washburns- the x50 pro, and the wi65 pro or wi66 pro are great guitars for the cash, and come stock with duncans- which aren't BKP's, but are far better than what you're liable to get on any other similarly priced guitar. you can pick up the wi65pro for about £300 if you shop around, as they've been discontinued, and the x50pro for around £400.

and you wouldn't need to upgrade the pickups- they aren't as good as BKPs, for sure, but they'd be good enough that you wouldn't have to upgrade them till you had a surplus of cash. Also, they don't have a Duncan JB, which can only be a good thing.

Actually, now that I think about it, the washburns are probably better than the lags. EDIT: Washburn are basically, IMO, what schecters want to be. And I don't think it's any coincidence that on the aforementioned forum, anyone who admits to being a Schecter fanboy normally hasn't tried any Washburns.

But like most korean guitars, you want to try the one you end up buying, as the quality control can vary. I think machinehead do them... I know you love that place...

out of the X50pro, X40pro e.t.c.... which one would you go for?

^ i'd probably go for the x50pro, but that's because it's 43mm width, while the wi65/66 are 42mm.

the x40pro has a locking trem, so it's out of the running, lol.

but yeah, quality-wise, there's not much in it- it just depends which you like the look of, and which plays a bit better in your opinion. the wi65pro is probably a little cheaper (though I think they're £350 in machinehead, compared to £300 that I've seen in a shop this side of the irish channel...)

EDIT: there's also an x50pro FE (flamed maple, EMG's)- I think it's a bit dearer, though- £450, maybe £500...

^ that's what most places are like, to be honest. they have some good prices to make you think they're good value, and then hope you'll buy some of their less good-value stuff next time without shopping around, as you think they're cheap for everything...

ah no didnt see that... yer the machinhead one is the EMGs... but then what would be better- stumping up 70 extra quid for EMGs... or paying £380 for the Duncans?.... bearing in mind id probably switch them out at christmas sorta time anyway... ?

well, the emgs should be better for metal- the custom custom, while a better pickup for all-round stuff, is alnico II for some inexplicable reason. which is used for vintage pickups, and tends to mush up under high gain (the only BKP's with al II are the stormy monday and the mule (and even it has the option of al IV, for a slightly less mushy tone!)), so yeah, I wouldn't want it for metal.

But if you're gonna switch them eventually anyway, not much point in paying extra for the EMG's... plus with the EMG's, you'd have to fork out for new pots as well, they use different value pots to passive pickups.

i remember seeing them ages ago and really liking the look of them... how do they compare in quality+price?...

and the pickups are just random ones arent they? no EMGs/ Duncans? at least not that i remember... which is kinda a good thing...

^ some of them have passive EMG's... i.e. cr@p. they're quite dear for having them (and not real EMG's or duncans).

the lags are good, IMO. As are the washburns. I haven't tried them head to head, so I can't really say which is better, to be honest- and even then, that'd be mainly preference. again, you need to try them. I think a shop in cambridge stocks them (arena music?), or that website link I gave you should have a "dealers" section.

Bear in mind, if you do like both guitars equally, go for the one with the name-brand pickups- not because they're necessarily any good, but because you can sell them a lot better than generic ones(or passive EMG's). and, they'll be better pickups, until you get round to getting some BK's... EDIT: as long as you don't get the impression that all the money went into the pickups, and they scrimped on everything else. that can happen sometimes (*cough* 2006 japanese jacksons, bar the sl3 and rr5 *cough*)
