I never really like the guy neither RHCP, they sound boring and they do the same album all over again and again IMHO.
I like many kinds of music but that just register as radio easy music to me...

I dont think it is so much whether JF is a good or bad guitarist

It IS important that you like him, listen to him and maybe feel inspired to play guitar as a result of him

As a 15 year old I was into Queen and KISS big-time
I adored the stuff Brian May did and still do, but it didn't maake me want to pick up a guitar and play as much as Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley did

Now those guys were often called bad guitarists- but they MADE ME WANT TO PLAY

As far as drugs go - a lot of my fave players took drugs, and some took way too many (or abused alcohol). I can't entirely judge whether it helped or hindered their creativity as musicians, but it certainly seems to have stunted a lot of them as human beings - some of those that I have met have been major assholes and the evidence of drink and drugs playing a part in that has been too obvious to overlook.

Even George Lynch used to do way too much coke - I recall that he swapped that habit for a gym habit and working out instead.

Drugs don't do shite, look at Led Zeppelin, they all got into heroin (Just before 1980) and their music went down the shiteter! But their older stuff was awesome.

This is what I think.

I really don't like Satriani.

(EXPLANATION: if you want to play fast all the time, with no feeling at all, you need really good technique to redeem yourself. His left hand's fine, but there's no picking, and a lot of it's all horrible tremolo tapping. Petrucci, Morse and Buckethead are my favourite - not just because they are inhuman shred machines, but they are creative, they have superb right hand technique, they can play with real feeling, and they don't try and make their solos sound fast through a jumble of legato passages, they think about what sounds cool and they play it. Rusty Cooley and MAB are just tossers.)

John Frusciante clearly doesn't try to make his solos a stream of fast, showy, brainless shred, but he does what he does amazingly, and he is an integral part of the sound of one of the most popular bands today, so he must be doing something right.

But feel free to disagree. I just really don't like Satch :(

original style, bet half of you can't play some of the syncopated rhythms on the early stuff that he has to play everynight infront of 50,000 people..

nobody has the right to shoot him down, and no he's not steve vai but who cares..

:D Satriani does play with feel. He`s also responsible for getting guitar players to make listenable instrumental music, more so than Vai ever was. The Legato technique he uses is his tradmark. In an interview he gave some years back he explained that there were so many great "Picking" guitar players that he decided to develop the Legato technique & move guitar playing forwards [ in that particular vain ]

He doesn`t play fast all the time either, prefering to find a strong melody. As for the claim he doesn`t have strong technique is simply laughable & ridiculous a statement to make.

Fruscianti is a good competant player with a distinctive style all his own. More power to his Elbow !

and even if u don't think those songs have feeling he's deffinatly got something..

i guess evryones got their different tastes. thats the beauty of music! if we all liked the same style it would be pretty boring!! all the guys mentioned on this thread make a pretty good living from playing guitar, so they must be doing it well to have the fanbases they have!

my top 3 (not in order) are slash, satriani, and of course hendrix. steve vai is technically better than all of those, but his melodies just dont do it for me. its just a matter of taste i suppose!

oh, and frusciante rocks :twisted:

You can't criticise Satriani for playing legato, that would be like slagging off Allan Holdsworth as being technically incompetent. These guys could alternate/sweep/economy pick anything that they wanted to but they choose a different technique. If we're talking right hand technique then we should probably be looking at flamenco guitarists as something to aspire to, they make even the competent rock guitarist look like a complete beginner. Paco de Lucia is so good he makes me cack my pants.

I realise that Satch must be doing something right to have such a phenomenally huge fanbase, and he's written some pretty darn good songs (Always with You Always with Me is my favourite), but I just find it hard to agree with his with his general soloing style, but hey, he is a fine musician, and i didn't really mean to call his style 'wrong' or 'bad' or such things (no, really, i didn't!), and i apologise to any offended fans... peace?

Interesting! I think Navarro's terrific * (that last Jane's album Strays was brilliant, and it's criminal it didn't sell a billion copies) but he didn't fit very well in RHCP. I like One Hot Minute, but BloodSugarSexMagik it isn't!

Not every guitar player is going to float your boat !! Your right as well i think Satch`s songs are very much strong points which was why i pointed out that he`s helped us guitar players to make/write better instrumentals. Again good call on Morse. Very good player. If your into Shred type players have you checked out Andy Timmons ?

I think that John Fustrane is very overatted! He's stolen so much stuff from Hendrix Stevie Ray Vaughn and Prince, especially Hendrix, he's just a clone. As for Satriani I think he's an absolute legend, and a genius. Without him, so many solo guitarists wouldn't even stand a chance of getting a record deal. He proved that Rock Instumental music SELLS! and it sells in millions, no one else before him was doing it like he was. I mean come on! the guitar solo on 'Not of This Earth' is like 20 years ahead of it's time! he's totally re-invented the way people percieve the electric guitar.
