Games Consoles for a 6 year old - PS2 or xBox??
« on: November 16, 2006, 08:46:30 AM »
OK - anyone out there with any experience of these consoles? (Not the Xbox 360, but the standard version) - I have a 6-year old son who wants a games console for Christmas. I want something that has a good range of games for his age group, has good graphics and (best of all) - has a good driving game for Dad...

Which one would you recommend?

Thanks

Mike

Mike, recently been thro' this buying decision with my own son. Ended up with a X360 but If I had to choose between the standard X box and the PS2 then It'd be the PS2- just so many games available and they're a nice neat package.

Dean - thanks - unfortunately the 'Financial Controller' will not allow an xBox 360 as she suspects that this would be more for father than for son...

And she'd be right!

Get him the Nintendo Wii! He will have lots of fun because the games are geared for a younger crown, and it also promotes hand eye coordination.
All for only $250  :D .

However, I'd recommend a Gamecube if your going with an older generation console, as most of the Xbox and PS2 games are geared for older teens (Halo, Grand Theft Auto, ect.)

Also the Xbox is going out of production on Nov. 22 so there will be NO, I repete NO new games for it after that date. Looks like it's time for me to get a 360   .

Well my recommendation stands at Gamecube or Wii, hope that this helps  :D .

If the Xbox is going out of production you should be able to pick up a great deal on one. Moreover, you will be able to buy all the games at greatly reduced prices. By the time you son is ready for the more advanced games and graphics there will be new generations of PSII or X360; like X760 & PSIII etc. etc. Just one word of advise...don't let your son play for extended periods of time the flash of the lights on a lot of any of the systems games is not good for their young cortex's, and it can also cause macular degeneration; that and kids just need to get out and play. Good luck with what ever you pick I’m sure your son will be thrilled with any game console you choose for him

You see why I am having trouble deciding what to go for???

For Nintendo Wii - see previous comment regarding my Financial Controller!! btw - they are around $330 in the UK!

Any comments on the graphics quality between xBox and PS2? Is there any difference??

Thanks

Gamecube, but let's be clear that I'd say the same if he was 6, 16, 26 or 86. It's not a 'kiddy' console in any way, it's just a better console.

Xbox has marginally better graphics in general than the PS2... but having said that some of the xbox games still have bad graphics, as do games on all platforms.

PS2 and Xbox both have better graphics than the gamecube... and while the Gamecube is kinda fun... it just doesnt do much for me... maybe for a kid though... if hes ever had a game-boy or the like then theres a lot of games/characters hed be familiar with as well so that could be a plus.

oh and the standard Xbox controllers would be far too big for his hands

I'm really trying to resist the temptation to get into another argument about console graphics, but PS2 better than gamecube? What?

Gamecubes are awesome, I much prefer it to the PS2. I might be selling mine, btw ;)

Wouldnt really say they're kiddy consoles as they have the Resident Evil series on..

well to be honest its hard to tell a significant difference between graphics on ANY of the consoles (not including 2nd gen. of course)... because they vary so much from game to game its impossible to generalise. but form the games ive personally played from both of them... PS2 are generally better.

PS2 and Xbox are both good, though the Xbox DOES have better graphics. Xbox has the legendary title for shooter such as Halo (and Halo 2)- must buy if you do go with Xbox- and for a great and realistic driving game - Forza Motorsport. For a kid's game...Fable may be easy enough for a kid. It is a very easy RPG - I think kids are into that stuff eh? Then there is Fusion Frenzy or whatever it's called. I know for a fact he would like that, just check out some websites and what not. PS2 has a wider range of games though - it IS Sony and it's been out longer. Hope that helps

The reason I vote for Nintendo is because they have kiddy games (which I love btw) such as, Super Smash Bros., Mario Sunshine, Legend of Zelda series, ect.

In fact the Wii has free online gameing and has downloadable NES, SNES, N64, and even Gamecube games useing a credit system (not sure how that works) so you don't have to pay for them. It also can play GC games and works with the GC controlers. Not to mention I love the whole motion sensing thing.

PS2 has one advantage though as both Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero 2 are both out for that console  :D .

Serioulsy though for a 6 year old you cannot go wrong with a Nintendo system. If you're getting one for the both of you, I'd go PS2 as it has a few kiddy games (Jak and Daxter). Xbox is for a much more mature audience and people who like PC gameing but would rather have a console.

PS2,
More games for kids and adults.

Driving games you say?
Burnout 5 is coming out early next year.  To me Burnout has to be one of if not the best racing game.
